Eduardo Nunez, who made the team in spring training essentially as a defensive backup in the infield, has now made five errors this season in just 21 innings of play spread over 13 games. Nunez' throwing error in the seventh inning of Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Tigers allowed two key runs to score and turned a one-run ballgame -- it was 3-2 at the time -- into a three-run game. (Brennan Boesch's solo HR off Boone Logan in the eighth capped the scoring). "I just made a bad throw,'' Nunez said through an interpreter. "It happens. Part of the game.'' Manager Joe Girardi was a lot more forgiving of Nunez' physical errors -- he also made a throwing error in the fourth -- than he had been of the mental errors committed on the basepaths Tuesday night by Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano. "We believe in this kid,'' Girardi said. "We don't believe that this is who this kid is. He is a kid that's exciting when he’s on the bases, he's shown that he's got some pop in his bat, he can do some things offensively. He's struggling a little bit right now throwing, he's in a little bit of a funk and it’s something that we have to get him through.'' Before the game, Derek Jeter -- who Girardi decided to give the day off after he sensed Jeter favoring his right hip running the bases in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game -- praised Nunez, his replacement for the day at shortstop. "He asks a lot of questions, he works extremely hard,'' Jeter said of the 24-year-old utility man. "You want to give him encouragement. The challenge for him is trying to play so many different positions. I would assume it’s a tough job. I’ve never had to do it but If you sit around for eight innings and have to go in in the ninth inning, I can't imagine how difficult it would be. So yeah, we all try to encourage him.''
