Yankees' Michael Pineda has sore shoulder, will undergo an MRI on Saturday
By Marc Carig/The Star-Ledger
TAMPA, Fla. — He slumped his shoulders. He spoke in somber tones. He
shrugged.
“I’m the same Michael Pineda from last year,” the despondent Yankees
pitcher said tonight, his words so unconvincing.
If any of it were true, perhaps the sad scene in the Yankees clubhouse
never would have happened. Maybe Pineda wouldn’t have given in to the
temptation to artificially generate the missing velocity on his fastball.
Maybe he wouldn’t have pitched through what he admitted later to be a
sore right shoulder. Maybe he wouldn’t have risked finding himself out
of the Yankees' rotation, or worse, seriously injured.
“It’s very possible,” a concerned manager Joe Girardi said tonight.
“That’s what’s going to happen.”
Indeed, this version of Michael Pineda has not been the one that the
Yankees traded their top prospect to acquire. And as a result, he suddenly
faces a worrisome future.
The 23-year-old, who a season ago with the Seattle Mariners dominated
hitters with a blazing fastball, will undergo an MRI exam Saturday morning
on his stiff right shoulder. His chances of beginning the season in the
rotation — once considered a safe assumption — are slim. And as a result,
the Yankees’ rotation logjam might have resolved itself.
“I tried to throw harder today,” said Pineda, who nevertheless labored
through 2.2 innings in the Yanks’ 13-9 victory over the Philadelphia
Phillies.
His fastball, lacking its typical velocity throughout camp, topped out
at 94 mph. But it sat at a pedestrian 92. Mechanically, he was a mess,
his attempts to power up forcing his shoulder to open prematurely. It
cost him velocity. Pineda appeared dejected during his slow walk off
the field departing after Carlos Ruiz’s bases loaded double, the Phils’
seventh hit. In tagging Pineda for six runs, the Phillies rarely looked
fooled.
“No one off balance,” said one scout, who requested anonymity because
he’s not authorized to speak publicly about another team’s players.
It was the first in a night of major injuries. Later in the game, lefty
reliever Cesar Cabral complained of pain in his elbow. He left the park
in a sling. Cabral, who had a good chance of making the team, will undergo
an MRI and an X-ray on Sunday.
Cabral, just like Pineda, didn’t disclose any issues until after the
game. Previously, Pineda insisted to both Girardi and general manager
Brian Cashman throughout the spring that his arm has felt fine, despite
the dip in velocity in his fastball.
“We’ve asked the question because of the velocity, how do you feel
physically?” Cashman said. “He’s always felt fine. The answer has
always been good. In terms of his mechanics, everything else like that,
the only thing that has obviously been a red flag has been the velocity.”
At the start of the day, the team had four starters gunning for three
spots. But if Pineda doesn’t start the season on time, the decision will
be made for the Yankees. CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda would be followed
by Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia. As the team’s rotation
stands now, the latter three would be lined up to make regular season
starts for the Yankees.
“For me, this spring, I pitched good enough, so I’m happy,” said
Garcia, who acknowledged that he’d accept a long reliever’s job in
the bullpen if he were the odd man out.
But now, for Garcia, who allowed just one run in 6.2 innings in a
Triple-A game against the Pirates, it may be a moot point. When asked
if he deserves a spot in the rotation, Pineda shrugged, raising his
sore shoulder, sending with his body language a message of doubt.
Said Pineda: “I don’t have (any) control for this situation.”
