Nationals 13, Kia Tigers 8 VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- All-Star closer Chad Cordero and starter John Patterson struggled on the mound in the Washington Nationals' 13-8 victory Wednesday over the Kia Tigers of South Korea. Cordero was roughed up for four runs, three earned, and four hits. He struck out two. ADVERTISEMENT Patterson, who had a 3.13 ERA in 31 starts last season, gave up two runs and three hits in the first inning. The right-hander was on a 35-pitch count, which he eclipsed by one. He threw 21 strikes and 15 balls in Washington's spring training debut. "Overall I felt good, my arm felt good," Patterson said. "Mechanically out of the stretch I don't feel quite where I want to be, but it's an easy fix." Patterson quickly got two strikes on the first batter, but close pitches called for balls seemed to bother him a bit. He gave up a double, followed by a walk and a single. "It's spring training for everybody. The curveball was right down the middle, and then the next pitch was a fastball in, and he missed that one, too," Patterson said, referring to plate umpire Eddie Hickox. "That kind of gets things off to a rocky start when you can't get those pitches. "It's probably that guy's first inning, too. He hasn't seen a pitch all winter, so I'll give him that one." Yong-Kyu Lee was caught stealing. After a strikeout, Jae-Joo Lee doubled in two runs before Patterson got out of the inning with another strikeout. Mike Bacsik came on in relief to earn the victory. Bacsik threw three innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out two. Kia faced six Nationals pitchers and got 12 hits. "You have to give the Korean team some credit. If you make a mistake they'll put the bat on the ball," Nationals manager Frank Robinson said. "We were a little sloppy. The other club was running around the bases a little bit more than you want them to run around even though it's the first game. But all in all it was a good offensive game for us. We made some good plays out there. We need to go out, condition and build and get better as we go." Washington had 16 hits. Cristian Guzman, Ryan Church, Kenny Kelly and Marlon Byrd all had two hits apiece. Alex Escobar added a solo home run in the eighth inning for the Nationals. Notes With Billy Wagner withdrawing from the World Baseball Classic, reliever Gary Majewski was added to the U.S. team 30-man roster. ... Tony Armas Jr., a member of the Venezuelan team in the WBC, was scratched from his slated start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday because he has to report to his national team. ... An MRI on backup catcher Robert Fick discovered "loose bodies" in his right elbow. Fick, a left-handed batting but right-handed throwing catcher, is day-to-day. ... RHP Pedro Astacio passed a physical, including an MRI on his elbow and shoulder, and signed a one-year contract with the Nationals.
