Apparently, at a starting point of five years and $85 million, no one was. Last Saturday, Rizzo flew to Atlanta to meet with Wieters face to face. Homework done, the two sides worked out a contract. And the baseball world, collectively, said: “Oh, yeah. Another Boras client to the Nats. The Nationals, neither in-season contenders nor offseason factors at the time, had to go an extra year at the same rate — $18 million annually — to land Werth. He went directly to Lerner. Lerner went directly to Rizzo: I got you a closer. Soriano made the Nationals better, but at two years and $28 million? The only reliever in history to ever earn more on an annual basis was Mariano Rivera.
