Roy Makaay made his professional debut at 18 years of age playing for Vitesse
Arnhem. In 1993, he came on in place of Dutch international Glenn Helder in an
away match against MVV (Maastricht). The young player quickly displayed his
talents in the top division of Dutch football. With his opportunistic, goal-
orientated playing style, he even attracted the attention of Louis van Gaal,
at that time with Ajax Amsterdam. The asking price was too high for Ajax,
however, and he moved to Tenerife for 10 million euros together with team-mate
Ferdi Vierklau.
Makaay, unfortunately, had little to cheer about on the Spanish island. The
team was continually struggling in the lower regions of the Primera Division
and to make matters worse, the many goals that Makaay scored did not prevent
Tenerife from being relegated in 1999. Makaay left the Canary islands for
Deportivo La Coruna.
The big striker now feels at home playing for Deportivo. Now used to competing
for honours and Champions League football the tougher the opposition, the
better Makaay旧 achievements. The former Vitesse player has also earned a place
in the 菷ranje squad amid stiff competition. His low goals-per-game ratio for
the national team has a lot to do with the position in which he often plays.
Dutch manager van Gaal often uses him as a right-winger, but Makaay prefers a
more central attacking role.
On 5 October 1996 Makaay made his debut in the Dutch national side, thanks to
an injury picked up by Schalke 04 (Gelsenkirchen, Germany) striker Youri Mulder
. Makaay is called up from the youth side as a replacement. He makes his debut
in a World Cup qualifier against Wales (a 3-1 victory). Team manager Guus
Hiddink gave him half a match. The national press viewed his first match with
the 菷ranje as a creditable debut but eight months were to pass before he
received a second call-up.
Although now a regular in Advocaat's squad Roy Makaay, together with Arnold
Bruggink, is the proud holder of the joint record (31) for the most appearances
with national youth side.
The multi-capped striker only broke his duck in his eighteenth appearance for
Holland, but that was mainly due to his move out to the right in the national
side. For the central striker role, Advocaat looks to have placed him fourth,
behind Kluivert, Van Nistelrooij and Hasselbaink.
Clubs:
Woezik (Wijchen), DIOSA (Ravenstein), Blauw-Wit (Nijmegen), NEC,
Vitesse (1989-1993), Vitesse (1993-1997), Tenerife (Spain 1997-1999) and
Deportivo La Coruna,(Spain 1999-present).
Honours:
Champions: 2000 (Deportivo La Coruna).
