Advocaat to lead Dutch until 2006
AMSTERDAM, Feb 13 (Reuters)
Dutch national coach Dick Advocaat has extended his contract until
July 2006, the Dutch football association (KNVB) said on Friday.
Advocaat took charge in July 2002, after the Netherlands missed out
on the 2002 World Cup, and steered them to Euro 2004 with victory
over Scotland in the playoffs.
The KNVB added that is was negotiating with assistant coach Wim van
Hanegem over a contract extension.
'The KNVB is very satisfied with Dick Advocaat,' said KNVB director
Henk Kesler.
'The coming months are very important. So I am very pleased that we
created clearness about the future before the start of preparation
of the European Championship.'
The Dutch will meet Germany, the Czech Republic and Latvia in Group D
at Euro 2004 in Portugal which starts on June 12.
Ruud Gullit, who had been training the Dutch youth side, agreed terms
to end his contract prematurely on June 1 after recently signing a
two-year deal with Feyenoord. He will not assist Advocaat during Euro
2004 as planned.
