EURO2004 Sweden vs Holland
BILLED AS......
Potential stalemate between two well-matched sides.
IN REALITY
Nil-nil it is, classic it ain't. Holland have more of the ball but few chances
, Sweden are content to snuff out the danger. The game opens up in extra-time,
with Henrik Larsson, Freddie Ljungberg and Arjen Robben all hitting the
woodwork and Andreas Isaksson saving well from Clarence Seedorf's free kick,
but the teams can't be separated so penalties it is. Ibrahimovic and Cocu
both miss and at 4-4 in the shootout, Van der Sar saves well from Mellberg,
leaving Robben to give Holland - at the fifth time of trying- their first ever
penalty shootout victory in a major tournament.
THE GOOD
Robben is again the brightest player on the pitch.
THE BAD
Alexander Ostlund is given a torrid time by Robben.
THE UGLY
Zlatan Ibrahimovic. So impressive in the tournament previously, he skies his
penalty into David Beckham territory.
THEY SAID WHAT?!
"They've tasted both sides of the coin now"
Andy Townsend coins his own phrase
THE FALLOUT
Holland through for a date with the hosts.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS?
The emotion of the penalty shootout seems to take its toll on Dutch coach ,
Dick Asvocaat, who declares:
"Sweden practised penalties and now you have seen the result"
