He was soon joined by Johan Cruyff and they won the championship in 1974. As coach of Holland he took Cruyff’s team to the World Cup final in 1974, when they lost 2-1 to West Germany in Munich, and he returned to fashion the outstanding side that included Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten that won the 1988 European Championship, beating England in the group stage and the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final. Michels signed Arnesen, then an 18-year-old amateur playing for FC Copenhagen, for Ajax in 1975. Shortly after, Michels left for a second spell with Barcelona, but in the next six seasons with Ajax, Arnesen won three championships, the Dutch Cup and was named player of the year in the Netherlands.
