This is PSV: Five to watch
3 Aug 2003 14:05
Five key men to keep an eye on in this afternoon's prestigious friendly
against PSV Eindhoven at White Hart Lane.
Kevin HOFLAND.
Defensive midfield or central defender. Aged 24 (born June 7, 1979) with
six caps (no goals) for Holland. Until injuries and form problems struck
him early last term Hofland had been one of the new heroes of Dutch football
and a target for a host of foreign clubs. Hofland has played more than a
century of league games despite being still only 22. Broke through with
Fortuna Sittard from whom he joined PSV three years ago.
Marc VAN BOMMEL.
Midfield. Aged 26 (born April 22, 1977) with 11 caps (four goals) for Holland.
Regular marksman from midfield whose goals and all-round game have earned
him admirers among a host of top clubs throughout western Europe. Scored
nine times in 28 league games last season. Joined PSV in 1999 after making
his league debut as a 16-year-old with 'discovery' club Fortuna Sittard.
PARK Ji-Sung.
Midfield. Aged 22 (born February 25, 1981) with 44 caps (eight goals) for
South Korea. Park was one of the heroes of South Korea's sensationalrun to
the World Cup semi-finals just over a year ago - under Hiddink, of course,
who then brought him to PSV. Park played in all Korea's matches and scored
their winning goal against Portugal. Played eight league games last term
as he adjusted to life and football in Holland. Was previously in Japan
with Kyoto Purple Sanga.
Mateja KEZMAN.
Forward. Aged 24 (born April 12, 1979) with 27 caps (10 goals) for Yugoslavia. Kezman has been the Dutch league's top scorer twice in the
past three seasons with 24 goals in 2000-01 and an amazing 35 in 33 games
last campaign. Had no difficulty stepping into Ruud Van Nistelrooy's shoes.
Played in his native Yugoslavia for Zemun, Radnicki, Loznica, Sartid and
then army club Partizan Belgrade - with whom he established his reputation
as one of Europe's top marksmen. Kezman was also the Yugoslav league's leading
scorer with 28 goals for Partizan in 1999-2000.
Dennis ROMMEDAHL.
Forward. Aged 25 (born July 22, 1978) with 32 caps (nine goals) for Denmark.
One of the most dangerous forwards in Dutch football when it comes to spotting
openings to create goals for his attacking team-mates. Rommedahl played for
Hoje Fladsaxe, Galdsaxe Hero, B93 and Lyngby in Denmark before PSV won the
ensuing transfer race in January 1997.
