Van Gaal To Seal Ajax Return?

As Ajax continue their search for a new technical director,
a vacancy which has been open since the beginning of the summer,
a familiar name has been linked
with a return to the Amsterdam giants.
Former coach Louis Van Gaal is widely tipped to take over
from Leo Beenhakker,
although he faces stiff competition
from PSV Eindhoven technical director Frank Arresen.
Van Gaal has been out of work since being sacked
from his second spell as coach of Catalan giants Barcelona,
but he is still fondly remembered by Ajax fans.
He led the club to glory in the Champions League in 1995,
before leaving for his first spell in Spain. However,
his fortunes have since fallen with his sacking by Barca,
which was preceded by a calamitous spell in charge
of the Dutch national team in which they failed
to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.
It was at Barcelona that Van Gaal worked with current Ajax coach
Ronald Koeman who was his assistant
and there would appear to be a big possibility that
the two will link up once again. However,
Frank Arresen is also high on the list of candidates
that was drawn up by Koeman,
following his excellent work in guiding PSV to their title triumph
in the Eredivisie last season.
Ajax have been searching for a successor to Beenhakker
since he resigned from his post to take up the management
of Mexican club side America in June
and the task is simple - to bring the title back
to the Amsterdam ArenA.
After a superb season in the Champions League last term,
where they reached the quarter final stage only to be beaten
by eventual winners AC Milan in the last minute of extra time,
Ajax failed to win the title, losing out on the final day to PSV.
However, they have got their most recent title challenge off
to the best possible start by winning their opening game 2-1 away
to Vitesse Arnhem and will be hoping to build on that in their bid
to reclaim the championship. The new technical director,
it has been said, should be announced before the
Champions League group stage kicks off
with Beenhakker's possible replacement
still in the melting pot.

AJAX are lining up Louis van Gaal for a return
to the club in the capacity of technical director.
Van Gaal, along with Frank Arnesen,
is on a shortlist to fill the position recently vacated
by Leo Beenhaker.
Ajax boss Ronald Koeman confirmed the club's interest
in bringing van Gaal back to Amsterdam,
but insisted a decision was still some way off.
"There is a list and besides Arnesen
also Louis van Gaal is on it,
but there hasn't been a decision taken yet."
Van Gaal enjoyed a hugely successful spell in charge
of Ajax between 1991 and 1997,
leading the club to European Cup glory in 1995.
