Both Paolo Maldini and Kakha Kaladze (pictured) are out of Friday’s European Super Cup clash with Porto, while the Georgian international is sidelined for at least a month with a torn thigh tendon. Reinforcements are needed for a team that has been largely quiet on the transfer market, bringing in only three new players. Barcelona captain Puyol has been a target for several weeks now and would be more than willing to accept a switch. His ￡10m price-tag is a major obstacle, however, especially for a club that has spent only ￡5.3m all summer. A new meeting with Barca directors, who wish to cut their mounting debts, is planned for Friday in Monaco. Meanwhile, Kaladze’s absence on the left flank opens the door to Dutch international Zenden. Chelsea are eager to get him off their wage bill and reportedly offered the winger to Inter as part of their bid for Hernan Crespo.
