Then they hoped to lure forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim to Sacramento with their
midlevel exception that would have started a five-year deal at approximately
$5 million. The other option would have been to work out a sign-and-trade
with Abdur-Rahim's former team, the Portland Trail Blazers, but the Kings
could not, and the forward reportedly will sign with New Jersey.
Because the Kings are over the salary cap, they never were true players in
the free-agency game. Their best chance to acquire an impact player is
through a trade. That means the shrinking pool of free agents may not be so
damaging to the Kings.
