Re: [新聞] Viduka wants to stay at Newcastle
How Shearer got Viduka up for a fight with United
Mark Viduka is an enigmatic character but it did not take Alan Shearer
long to work out how to get the best out of him. Chief sports writer
Luke Edwards reports
May 13 2009
by Luke Edwards, The Journal
When Alan Shearer marched on to Newcastle United's training ground for
the first time as a manager in April and asked Mark Viduka if he wanted to
fight, some would have expected punches to be thrown.
As a player, Shearer got the most out of every drop of talent he had been
born with, yet on his first day as a manager he was confronting a player
whose effort can pale in comparison to the ability he possesses.
Viduka is an infuriating footballer, supremely talented, but alarmingly
injury prone to the point where his attitude and commitment have been openly
questioned by managers and supporters frustrated by his apparent frailty.
Shearer, though, did not worry about a reputation and he did not listen
to those who said the 33-year-old with the dodgy Achilles was a has-been
ready to return to the beaches and barbecues Down Under.
Shearer remembered the player he had lined up against at Leeds United and
Middlesbrough and the devastation he could cause to a defence when he was
fit, motivated and, perhaps more significantly for a complex character like
this, happy.
Shearer
It has been an early triumph for a rookie manager who has been rewarded
with the sort of high-class performances from Viduka which have reminded us
that, even in the twilight of his career, he is a world-class centre forward
when handled correctly. “When Alan Shearer came in, the first thing he said
to me was ‘Are you up for a fight?’, said Viduka, before clarifying he had
not actually meant with him. “And I am always up for a fight.
"No, he didn't take me into the office and say that. It was at the
training ground and I said 'definitely'. I was in a situation (like this) at
Leeds and getting relegated is not a pretty thing. It's something no one
likes.
"That was what I needed to hear. Listen, I always–I wouldn't say looked
up to–but I admired Alan as a player. He knows we play the same position and
when someone like that comes, someone with that kind of personality, and what
he has done in the game and they come to you and say 'I need you'. Things
start, you know, it lifts you up, really lifts you up, no matter who you
are.”
Viduka received a standing ovation when he was replaced late on against
Boro with the game already won, a reaction in stark contrast to the treatment
he received during the 2-1 away defeat by Wigan Athletic back in December
when he was booed and jeered by some United fans.
Dogged by an Achilles injury which needs to be carefully managed and
which will end his career eventually, Viduka has rarely been fit this season.
When he was, however, he found himself working with a manager, Joe Kinnear,
who did not understand him and, therefore, failed to get anything like the
best from him.
"I'm really happy at the moment," said Viduka, who has been told by
Shearer he may still earn a one-year extension to his contract if he can
prove he deserves it between now and the end of the season.
"Put it this way, when a couple of months ago, I was in a situation when
I had problems with my Achilles and stuff like that, Joe Kinnear really
wasn't . . . he didn't look as if he wanted to use me and stuff like that.
I'd worked really hard to get myself back, but you know under Joe Kinnear, I
don't know what he was thinking, but I don't think he wanted to use me.
"If Alan hadn't come in, I don't know to be honest, I really don't know
(whether I would have played again). But everything is open again. I would
love to stay, but we shall see what happens. I would love the fans to see the
best of me, but I don't know what the club are thinking. I wouldn't say I owe
the fans, that's a big word, but I would love to play here in good times. I
experienced that a little bit under Kevin Keegan when we started to play some
really good football.
"I love the feeling going into a game knowing you are going to do some
damage as a team, having that confidence. The thing is, this season has just
been chopping and changing from the start with what's gone on."
However, with two games left to play, Newcastle's Premier League future
is in their hands for the first time in weeks and a win against Fulham on
Saturday could guarantee survival.
With just one win in 19 games before the Middlesbrough victory, Viduka is
suddenly confident the floundering Magpies are ready to fly again under
Shearer.
He said: "We have been under a lot of pressure lately and it was a very
important game for us, a massive game for us. It's a derby obviously and they
are always difficult games. We needed a big performance and I think as a
team, we worked very, very hard, especially when we went (a goal) down.
"These fans here are crazy about their club. It's the most important
thing, you know and I think it showed. They got behind us and I think they
really helped us.
"They were a big difference. I remember playing here for Leeds and Boro
and when this crowd gets behind the team, it is very difficult to play
against. We want more of the same against Fulham."
