Sweden will give Celtic striker Henrik Larsson until the last possible
minute to change his mind about playing at Euro 2004.
The Swedes must hand in their final squad listing for the tournament on
June 2 and although co-coach Lars Lagerback will name his preliminary
squad on May 6, he will allow Larsson the maximum amount of time to
decide whether he wants to play.
The 32-year-old forward announced his retirement from international
football following the 2002 World Cup but then made a one-off appearance
last year in a Euro 2004 qualifier against Hungary.
Lagerback is not about to put any pressure on Larsson to return for
this summer's finals, however, and although he admits to speaking with
the player, he said it had nothing to do with Euro 2004.
'I don't want to press a yes or a no from him. A talk about the Euro
finals at this stage could therefore give us the opposite effect,'
Lagerback said.
'We will present the squad for the Euro final in Portugal on May 6 and
eventually keep a door open for Henrik Larsson until June 2 when UEFA
must have the definitive squads.'
Lagerback, in joint charge with Tommy Soderberg, was speaking at the
announcement of the Sweden squad for next week's friendly against
Portugal. It includes Southampton's Anders and Michael Svensson, Aston
Villa's Marcus Allback and Olof Mellberg, Celtic's Johan Mjallby,
Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg and Tobias Linderoth of Everton.
