Finland weakened by injuries for Denmark friendly
Tue 19 August, 2003 12:04 BST
HELSINKI, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Finland will be without attacking midfielder
Jari Litmanen and three other top players for Wednesday's friendly against
Denmark in Copenhagen after a rash of late withdrawals from their squad.
In addition to the loss of Litmanen with an Achilles injury, the midfield
will be further depleted by the absence of Auxerre midfielder Teemu Tainio,
while a minor injury makes Kaiserslautern's Mika Nurmela doubtful.
Coach Antti Muurinen has also lost two of his best defenders in Litmanen's
Ajax team mate Petri Pasanen and Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia.
Muurinen has called up Markus Heikkinen of Aberdeen, Juuso Kangaskorpi from
Finnish side Haka, Miika Koppinen of Tromso and Sheffield Wednesday's Shefki
Kuqi.
Finland are using the match as preparation for next month's resumption of
their campaign to qualify for the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal. They are
third behind Wales and Italy in Group Nine with six points from six matches.
