[歐錦]Preview: Iceland v Germany
Soccerage.com
09/06/2003. BACKGROUND
Germany and Iceland will lock horn in Reykjavik on Saturday night for
a match which promises to go a long way towards deciding the outcome
of Group 5.
The Icelanders are billing this as the biggest match in their history
and will go into this crucial clash as leaders with 12 points to show
for from 6 matches. Their opponents on the night, the silver medalists
from the last World Cup, are just one point behind, however, and have
a match in hand.
If Rudi Voeller's side can finally get their act together and beat Iceland
away and then go on and do the same thing against third-placed Scotland
at home they will achieve their objective of qualifying for Portugal
without having to go through the dreaded playoffs.
LATEST TEAM NEWS
While Asgeir Sigurvinsson's side have no real injury problems to speak
of going into Wednesday's showdown, the Germans are sweating on the
fitness of Fredi Bobic, Kevin Kuranyi and Bernd Schneider, while VfL
Bochum winger Paul Freier has definitely been ruled out due to a broken
foot leaving Voeller with few options on the left. There is good news
in that team talisman Micheal Ballack is back from an injury that kept
him out of the highly unimpressive 2-0 win against the Faroe Islands
and Sebastian Deisler is available for selection after an almost year
-and-a-half absence.
