[歐錦]Norway drop Carew over Riise row
OSLO, Oct 1 (Reuters)
Norway will be without key striker John Carew for their crucial Euro 2004
qualifier against Luxembourg next week following the bitter row between
the AS Roma player and Liverpool's John Arne Riise.
Carew, who recently joined Roma from Valencia, has failed to make contact
with the national team since he was thrown out of the squad last month for
hitting Riise during training for Norway's friendly against Portugal.
'I got a signal from Carew via his agent that he would say 'no' to playing,
but I still wanted to get in contact with the player,' Semb told a news
conference after announcing the squad for the October 11 match against
Luxembourg.
At the time Semb described the incident on the team coach as 'unacceptable
behaviour' although he said Carew had since apologised to the other players.
Semb picked Austria Wien's Sigurd Rushfeldt and Rosenborg Trondheim's Fredrik
Winsnes and Stale Stensaas for the squad.
Norway, fourth in the Group Two with 11 points behind Denmark, Romania and
Bosnia, must win to stand any chance of qualifying for next year's finals
in Portugal.
