Wilkinson scoops Players' Player of the Year ... again! 18/11/03
Second consecutive award for 'Wilko'
Lions and England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson scooped yet another accolade
ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2003 Final, being named as the Players'
Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
The 24-year-old pivot won the award in 2002 and following a hat-trick
of wins in November soon after that, a Grand Slam-winning Six Nations
campaign and tour wins in Australia and New Zealand he has yet again
won the respect of his playing colleagues.
The inaugural International Rugby Players Association (IRPA) Player of
the Year was Wallaby scrum-half and captain George Gregan in 2001.
Wilkinson tallied 262 points to outpoint the New Zealand quartet of
Carlos Spencer (117 points), Doug Howlett (89), Joe Rokocoko (45),
Richie McCaw (44) and Ireland's Brian O'driscoll (38).
It is the latest in a long line of awards for Wilkinson in his five-
year Test career so far, not least being awarded MBE by the Queen in
her New Year's Honour's List, the youngest rugby player ever to do so.
Since then he has become one of the sport's most famous and bankable
stars with his abilities on the field, and his good looks off it,
propelling him into the star status category.
Voting for the Awards is carried out on a 3-2-1 basis by players
from the national squads of France, Ireland, Wales, England, Australia,
New Zealand and South Africa and covers the 12-month period from October
1, 2002 until September 31, so therefore not the RWC.
To ensure against bias and prejudice, players are not eligible to vote
for a player in their own national squad. They must vote for players
from another country.
Although ranked fourth in the Player of the Year Award, New Zealand
winger Joe Rokocoko was rewarded for his exceptional year when named
the Investec IRPA Newcomer Of The Year.
The try-scoring Rokocoko earned 314 points to comfortably beat team-
mate Jerry Collins (75), South Africa's Ashwin Willemse (66), New Zealand's
Keven Mealamu (63), Australia's Lote Tuqiri (35) and South Africa's Juan
Smith (35).
New Zealand was named the Investec IRPA Team of the Year in a tight
contest with England although that will be little consolation after
their semi-final loss to Australia last weekend.
The All Blacks amassed 316 points outpointing England (295), Argentina
(95), Ireland (88) and France (73).
The Investec Try of the Year, as judged by former Australian scrum-half,
Nick Farr-Jones, was Chris Paterson's magnificent try for Scotland against
South Africa last June.
All Black winger, Jonah Lomu, was honoured with the Special Merit Award
for his significant contribution to the game.
