Hareide to take over as Norway coach
OSLO, Dec 1 (Reuters)
Rosenborg Trondheim trainer Age Hareide was hired as Norway's national
coach on Monday with the task of rebuilding the team after their failure
to qualify for Euro 2004.
Hareide, 50, will take charge from January 1 after Nils Johan Semb, who
quit last month when Spain beat Norway in their playoff to reach the
European Championship finals in Portugal.
'We've agreed to take on Age Hareide as national coach for four years,'
Karen Espelund, head of the Norwegian Football Association, told reporters
after an evening meeting with Rosenborg leaders.
She agreed to pay Rosenborg an undisclosed sum to get the club to free
Hareide from his contract, which had two years to run.
Hareide joined Rosenborg a year ago and steered them to a 12th consecutive
league title in 2003. Rosenborg also won the Cup.
Rosenborg beat Red Star Belgrade last week to reach the third round of
the UEFA Cup. They had failed to make it into the Champions League this
season, however, ending a record run of eight consecutive appearances.
Hareide has also coached at Denmark's Brondby, Helsingborg of Sweden and
Norway's Molde.
Semb steered Norway to Euro 2000 but they have since slid down FIFA's
rankings to 39th in November from a brief spell in second in the mid-1990s
behind Brazil.
Hareide's assistant at Rosenborg, Ola By Riise, is likely to take over
his job at the club.
