這件事還蠻嚴重的在美東時間三月十九號在客場對活塞時， http://www.nba.com/games/20040319/DENDET/boxscore.html Andre Miller對Melo的出手選擇感到不滿，因此Melo跟隊友賭氣當第四節總教練再叫Melo上場時，Melo拒絕上場身為喬丹牌的老闆，Jordan對其下的代言人相當失望因為他打了手機給Melo(又有一說是Melo主動打給Jordan) 他們談到了十年前，Pippen在公牛隊時拒絕上場的事情 (也就是Pippen不爽Phil Jackson把最後一擊交給Kukoc來執行) 這件事對Pippen的形像影響很大.... 然後Jordan告訴Melo，球隊輸了，不要洩氣。球隊贏了，就要保持下去 Melo對媒體說這件事是一個經驗，他必須從此學習。 Melo對此也說，由於這個事件，他得到最佳新秀的機會已經慢慢沉向大海了但就算Melo沒有跟隨Jordan的腳步得到最佳新秀獎 Jordan也會作為一個良師益友常常跟他談話教導他而在帶領金塊前進季後賽的路上，Melo說 "我會一肩扛起" 。 -- "I don't know any franchise players that come off the bench.
