By Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writer Posted June 29, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------ The story goes that the St. Joseph's basketball team was shuffling through screening at the Cincinnati airport. A security guard asked Jameer Nelson, the Hawks' pocket-sized, 5-foot-11 all-America point guard, if he was the team's water boy(遞茶水的小弟). Used to being mistaken for anything but a player, Nelson wasn't offended(被冒犯而感到憤怒). He was motivated. He said, "Yeah, I'm the water boy -- the best water boy you'll ever see." Nelson has heard it all. No wonder the little guy has a little bit of an edge to him, a little bite. He has a chip on his shoulder(好鬥的情緒) that's so big -- "It's not going to go away," he says -- that you wonder if it was part of his carry-on baggage for his flight to Orlando. Introduced as a member of the Magic on Monday, Nelson again was subjected to the same questions and doubts that dogged him before he was named college basketball's player of the year, graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and led St. Joseph's to unprecedented(史無前例) heights last season. Dwight Howard beat out Emeka Okafor to become the Magic's No. 1 draft pick. Nelson beat out Okafor to become the Division I player of the year. But Howard is 18, his warts(缺點) never exposed as a dominating high school phenom, and he stands 6 feet 10 1/4. Nelson is 22, and critics have had four years to pick out his flaws(缺陷), his biggest seemingly his small-fry(小魚苗) size. "Well, if I can do the same things as somebody that is 6-4 or 6-5 can at the point, what is the difference?" he said. "Don't tell me that somebody is better than me because they're 6-2. Last time I checked we play with our shoes on and I measure at almost 6-1 with my shoes. If you want me to measure at 6-2, I'll put insoles(鞋內軟墊) in, too." He's heard all the jokes, such as he's a half-Nelson, not a full-Nelson. Nelson says he wouldn't want to be any taller because, "I don't think that would be me. I might not have the intangibles(無形資產) I have now." Which are leadership, grit and growl wrapped around some talent. The rebuilding Magic are looking for stars, of course, while we pardon their dust. They also are looking for ultimate competitors and passionate professionals. Nelson, who has a tattoo on his chest (胸膛上有刺青) of a heart with a basketball scrawled inside it that reads "Love of the Game," fits the description. The Magic feel they've snared(謀得) a younger version of Darrell Armstrong. They thought enough of Nelson to aggressively work a draft-night trade. The Magic handed the Denver Nuggets a future first-round pick that could become a lottery pick if Orlando doesn't improve quickly. Nelson lasted until the 20th pick. He had to watch several high school kids get drafted before him, an oversight ridiculed by his former coach, Phil Martelli. "I don't know what the hell these guys [NBA teams] are doing," said Martelli, who was in New York last week to watch the NBA draft. "They're taking all those babies when they got a man sitting right there." Treated as an icon in Philadelphia, right along with Donovan McNabb, Nelson was still fuming(憤怒) over the draft-night snub(冷落) when he spoke with Magic General Manager John Weisbrod. "Now he's got a little hatchet to bury," Weisbrod said. "Talk about a chip on his shoulder. I hung up from that phone call and I was -- I'm not easily moved to giddiness -- but I was pretty giddy." Even his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers, stiff-armed (美式足球用語，用手臂撐開) him. Coach Jim O'Brien said there were many players better than Nelson, who led St. Joe's to a 27-0 regular-season record and averaged 20.6 points. "Throughout my life, I have always been overlooked because they say I'm too small, too this, too that," Nelson said. "What they don't understand is that I'm getting the job done." Nelson is a solid, muscular(健壯的) 190 pounds, able to get off his shot, and has finger-snap quickness and makes heady decisions. The knock on him? Whether he can literally(不誇張地) stand up to taller NBA point guards. "I've been going against bigger guards all my life," Nelson said. "I think the biggest transition is off-the-court stuff, all the free time and just getting used to the atmosphere." Nelson might not be the Magic's starter at point if Steve Francis arrives in a trade. But they believe he can be a change-of-pace force, driven by his hard fall in the draft. "It's a blessing in disguise(偽裝), because obviously . . . I'm wanted down here, I'm needed," he said. "I'm the type of person that I can improve on everything, and I will improve everything." Nelson must prove himself again. He has another tattoo that reads, "All Eyes On Me," meaning just watch.
