Orlando will target Foyle
From Orlando Sentinel http://tinyurl.com/2pdng
Eric Dampier,
Mark Blount
Bruce Bowen

Orlando will target Foyle
The Warriors center is the Magic's top priority in free
agency starting today.

The Orlando Magic have put Golden State Warriors center
Adonal Foyle at the top of their free-agent wish list,
believing he might be their best combination of
affordability and fit.
NBA teams can begin talking with free agents today, but they
can't start signing them until July 14.
Although Magic General Manager John Weisbrod declined to
discuss which players the Magic would be pursuing, two NBA
sources confirmed the Magic's strong interest in Foyle.
Foyle, 29, is a shot-blocking/rebounding/defensive center
who has spent his seven NBA seasons at Golden State, mostly
backing up Erick Dampier, also a free agent as of today.
Foyle, 6 feet 10 and 270 pounds, is no offensive threat(威脅性),
but he could become a defensive force in the Eastern
Conference. He would fit well with the hard-working, team
concept that Weisbrod is trying to create as he reconstructs
the team without Tracy McGrady.
Because the Magic already are over the salary cap, they can
offer only their $5 million middle-class exception to lure a
free agent this summer. They have the option of extending a
contract up to six years with 10 percent raises annually,
creating a deal close to $35 million. They also could split
the exception and sign two players for $2.5 million each.
Although Foyle missed the first half of last season
recovering from knee surgery, he finished strong in the
final month. In the 2002-03 season, he played all 82 games
and averaged 5.4 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in just
21.8 minutes.
"He would be a nice fit for what the Magic are trying to do,"
said one NBA assistant coach. "He's a guy who knows his role,
and he's happy in it."
It likely would take at least the full $5 million exception
for the Magic to secure Foyle, who was paid $4.5 million.
Other teams expected to pursue him today are the Phoenix
Suns and Atlanta Hawks, in addition to the Warriors.
It would cost considerably more to land Dampier, who opted
out of his contract that would have paid him $17 million
over the next two years. Dampier is bigger and a much better
offensive player than Foyle.
Orlando also will consider a sign-and-trade deal if they need
more than $5 million to sign someone they like. By combining
Drew Gooden ($3.2 million) and Andrew DeClercq ($2.7 million)
in a trade, they could pay $6 million for a free agent.
Weisbrod said the Magic also will focus upcoming efforts on
finding a small forward, either through free agency or in a
trade. They have expressed interest in free agents Stephen
Jackson of the Atlanta Hawks, Bruce Bowen of the San Antonio
Spurs and Stacey Augmon of the New Orleans Hornets.
Along with Foyle in the front court, Orlando also would
consider Mark Blount of the Boston Celtics and Vitaly
Potapenko of the Seattle SuperSonics.
The biggest star in the free-agent market today is Kobe
Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, but only a few teams
(Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets, Spurs and Hawks) other than
the Lakers have enough salary-cap space. Bryant opted out of
a contract that would have paid him $15 million this season.
The Magic have dramatically altered their team in the past
two weeks, adding first-round draft picks Dwight Howard and
Jameer Nelson and trading McGrady for point guard Steve
Francis, shooting guard Cuttino Mobley and center Kelvin Cato.
More changes are coming, according to Magic executives.
"We've just finished the second act in a six-act play,"
Weisbrod said. "I'm very pleased with what's happened in the
last 10 days. The deal and the draft all fit with what we're
doing. But we're not done. We've got other things prepared
to fall into place."
In search of a small forward, the Magic have talked to the
Miami Heat about a possible trade for Caron Butler. They
have dangled(引誘,追求) both Gooden and DeClercq as trade
possibilities.
Even though they just traded for Cato, a veteran center,
they still feel a need to get Foyle, giving them a major
upgrade from last season. They don't expect to re-sign
Steven Hunter, and DeClercq might be traded.
In the next couple days, they will talk with free agents
and prepare a summer-league team that will include Nelson
and Howard, along with second-year guard Keith Bogans.
