------------------------------------------------------------ Considering the Shaq/Kobe ruckus, Hedo Turkoglu joined the Magic quietly. Needing cap space to sign Manu Ginobili, Bruce Bowen and Brent Barry, San Antonio withdrew its qualifying offer to Turkoglu. He went from restricted to unrestricted free agent and signed a six-year deal with the Magic that will pay him just under $38 million over the length of the contract. Orlando now has a 24-year-old small forward to groom. Turkoglu has averaged 7.9 per game and 3.7 rebounds over four NBA seasons. "It feels great to be in Orlando," said Turkoglu, who came to Las Vegas to meet with the Magic and sign his new deal. "This is a great opportunity for me, and it gives new life to my career." At 6 feet 10, he brings the size and skill the Magic sought at small forward. He is used to winning, having played with the Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs . But he has been inconsistent in the past and severely lost confidence two years ago with the Kings. Magic General Manager John Weisbrod wants to identify young players just as they are about to reach their full potential. Though Turkoglu's numbers might not suggest he's worth the money, Weisbrod said he believes he will prove to be. "We definitely think that way," Weisbrod said. "We try and get guys before their apex. The best teams get guys before their apex." The Magic say they hope their new running, open-court style will suit Turkoglu, who played well in San Antonio but was used more as a shooter. The signing also gives Orlando insurance in case small forward Grant Hill cannot return from a fourth ankle surgery. "If Grant's healthy, it's a bonus -- that's the way we want to approach it," Weisbrod said. "If Grant's not healthy, we don't want to feel like we're dead in the water." Weisbrod spent some time talking with Turkoglu and his agent, Lon Babby, about his role and minutes. Weisbrod only promised that Turkoglu would be an important player, whether he starts or comes off the bench. He also said that, if Hill is healthy, minutes for both players can be found because they're so versatile (多功能的). Turkoglu can play both forward spots and some shooting guard. Hill can play all three perimeter positions. "I think, if Grant is healthy and feeling good, he's going to play normal minutes and normal time," Weisbrod said when asked if Hill would be limited. "I just want Grant's return to be the icing on the cake." Turkoglu was one of many players who have been offered surprisingly long and lucrative contracts this summer. Weisbrod said he thinks Turkoglu got what he deserves, considering a market in which every average big man or promising wing player is receiving $30 million to $40 million. "Signing Hedo was good value," Weisbrod said. "A lot of guys, in my mind, are getting overpaid." The Magic began play in the Reebok Vegas Summer League on Wednesday. No. 1 pick Dwight Howard was excused to accept the Gatorade national high school player of the year award in Los Angeles and to attend the ESPY Awards. He is due to arrive in Las Vegas this morning.
