有關 Brandon Bass 的評價與他能帶給奧蘭多的幫助。
A Dallas perspective on Brandon Bass
I, admittedly, didn't know a whole lot about Brandon Bass before this offseason
. I know he's been a guy with potential, but guys with potential are all over
the NBA. I know he can shoot, but his range is only 16-18 feet. I know he's
struggled with defense and rebounding, two traits the Magic sorely need to
complement Dwight Howard.
So sue me if I'm not exactly bouncing off the walls at the thought of Bass in
a Magic uniform. But I'm starting to warm up to the idea. I spoke to Rob
Mahoney, the brains behind The Two Man Game, today via e-mail, and here's what
he had to say about Brandon Bass:
Personally, I think Bass would be a fantastic fit for the Magic. That said, he
doesn't fit as seamlessly into offense as you'd like. SVG may have to re-work
some of the schemes to allow Bass to operate from the high post or baseline, be
cause his range doesn't quite reach the NBA three. He is, however, a reliable
jumpshooter from midrange, and his finishing abilities around the basket should
be complemented nicely by the extra attention Dwight Howard draws down low.
Through my own observations, it seemed that the Magic could really benefit from
another rebounder opposite Dwight. I know that Bass' rebounding rates aren't
spectacular, but he also played a lot of minutes as an undersized center. But
for Orlando's power forward, it shouldn't be about what percentage of rebounds
come Bass' way; it's more important that the Magic have a tough, physical
option to throw into the mix at power forward. Bass isn't about to make Magic
fans forget about Hedo Turkoglu, and he can't even mimic Shard's contributions
to the position. Still, he's a player. He's young, and he's improving (his
defense is already light-years better than it was when he came into the league)
, and the combination of potential, skill, age, and price should have people
pretty excited.
If the Magic sign Bass, the only parties that will be sorry will be Orlando's
playoff opponents and the rims at Amway. Bass and Howard will rock the boat,
baby.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith Q&A from the Orlando Pro Summer League
While at the Orlando Pro Summer League, OMD and a host of other reporters had
a chance to catch up with Magic General Manager Otis Smith. The subjects ranged
from Hedo Turkoglu to Orlando's plans for the rest of the offseason.
Here are the most intriguing things Otis said, along with a full transcript
after the jump.
Media: Do you feel a little different making moves now that you've been to the
Finals?
Otis Smith: I don't think I'm in any different position that I was in last year
or the year before. I think anytime that you're in the summer in the offseason
you're trying your team better to have an opportunity to win a championship.
To say we weren't thinking the same thing last year is kind of crazy because we
were.
M: With the financial restraints the team faces right now... (Otis cuts off
question)
OS: Honestly I can spend as much as I want, so let's throw that out right now.
M: How many of the guys on the summer league roster have a chance at making the
team?
OS: Well, right now we have eight men on our roster. With that said we have
room to take seven more. You can fill out your roster however you want to fill
out your roster. We still have some work to do in free agency.
M: What do you want to see out of Ryan Anderson this week?
OS: Just a continuation of what he's done with New Jersey. We liked him coming
out in the draft. With him, his shooting is impressive. The way we play, it's
more spread you still want to see him do those types of things and rebound the
ball. Those things are big.
M: Is Glen ?Big Baby? Davis on your radar?
OS: Not today.
M: Is that something that could happen later?
OS: I think we like who we like. You can't make us like who we don't like.
There's been a lot written about who we like and most of it is not true. We
have a tendency to like who we like, most franchises do, so right now he's just
not on our radar.
M: When was the last time you had time with Gortat's people?
OS: It's been a few days.
M: You expecting a signed offer sheet to come in on Wednesday?
OS: We'll see. I don't know what to expect but we'll see when it gets down to
it.
Follow up:
Media: Do you think Boston adding Rasheed Wallace is a move that allows them
to keep pace with the rest of the teams in the Eastern Conference?
Otis Smith: They're a pretty good team as it stands. We still have to go
through them, they're the last team in the East to win the championship, so we
have to go through them to win it.
M: I know you don't make moves based on what other teams do, but do you get the
sense other teams are making moves on what you're doing? Like trying to find
someone to defend Dwight?
OS: No, I don't think that. I think that goes without saying. I think every
team has to defend him at some point and time, but I don't think teams are
being reactive to Dwight in the middle so there's some things we have to
continue to improve and there are some things other teams have to continue to
improve.
M: Two years ago it was kind of a stretch to say you were championship
contenders... (Otis cuts off question)
OS: Not for me. A year ago it was stretch for you guys too, not for me. I think
for the most part all of us set the standard pretty low for most teams and
teams believe what you guys write. Unfortunately that's not the way it goes,
guys have to come in and work and think we have a chance to be one of the best
teams in the league.
M: How reassuring is it to have a guy like Anthony Johnson coming back?
OS: Quite frankly I like the eight guys I have in uniform right now. We played
nine or 10, most teams don't go past nine guys, so I like the guys we have
right now. We just have to round out our roster and get a little more size.
M: Would you say this year would be the first year where you look at your team
and say ?I have a bunch of vets??
OS: (laughs) I've got vets? I don't know if I would qualify it that way. We
have a bunch of guys that have been around a while. Our young guys are still
our young guys even though they've been in the league for a few years. Dwight
is still a young guy, J.J. is still a young guy, Ryan Anderson is still a young
guy. So we have some veteran guys, but we're still relatively middle-aged team.

Marcin Gortat Q&A from the Orlando Pro Summer League
Marcin Gortat made an appearance at the Orlando Pro Summer League on Monday,
taking time to chat it up with Magic summer players Steven Milosevic and
Milovan Rakovic, while also talking to Dwight Howard, Stan Van Gundy and Otis
Smith.
Gortat met with members of the media very briefly and discussed his future with
the Dallas Mavericks.
He sounded to me like man who is pretty certain that his days as a member of
the Magic are over. You can judge for yourself below. (You can also see video
of part of the interview here.)
Media: Why are you here at summer league?
Marcin Gortat: I'm here because I live here and actually I'm just watching
summer league for the first time in five years where I'm a spectator and not
a guy in summer league. It's a great feeling to watch these guys compete for
a spot in the NBA.
M: Was the move more about playing time than money?
MG: Well, it's a huge opportunity for me to play for Dallas obviously. Playing
with a guy like Jason Kidd who is one of the best point guards in history. It's
just huge. Having Dirk Nowitzki as the best power forward in the league and
being with those guys on the floor is opening a lot of things for me. We'll
see what's going to happen. Either way, Orlando or Dallas I'm going to end up
good. I'm going to around good guys with great coaching staffs and a great team
who's going to compete for championships
so we'll see, the next 72 hours will show.
M: Is it hard waiting?
MG: Yeah, it's hard waiting and trying to stay away from trouble, that's how it
is. Sometimes you think you're going to stay away from trouble and trouble is
going to find you. Basically I'm trying to stay at home and relax as much as I
can. I've got the European Championship in Poland. My national team is going to
host the European Championship so that's going to be a big thing for my country
. Hopefully I can go over there with a contract with a situation where I'm just
going to focus on basketball.
M: Did you talk to Otis about his plans?
MG: I didn't talk to Otis about anything, I was just talking about his Camaro.
He just bought a new Camaro. We don't have anything to talk about. On July 8
he'll have the papers on his desk and we'll see what he's going to do.
