Standing 6-10, with a wide, chiseled frame, an excellent wingspan and above average athleticism, Daniel Orton passes the look test and then some for what NBA teams seek from at a player at his position. He is fairly nimble, runs the court competently, can get off his feet, has a solid second bounce and very good hands on top of that. Simply put, there just aren’t many players around like him, which makes him somewhat of a commodity even in a draft as deep as this one is with big men. Orton probably isn’t ready to see very many minutes in the NBA in the short-term, but the physical tools he displays combined with his budding skill-set as a defender, rebounder and low-post threat make him one of the more intriguing long-term big men prospects in this draft. Whichever team picks him will have to be very patient with him, but he certainly has the potential to make them look very smart down the road. For Orton putting up a .676 against the toughest part of the schedule is impressive. On the negative side it ignores his slow start and his much less impressive .539 overall number. Even if the .676 on a low number of attempts is a real indication of his ability to score inside, it merely places Orton on the same class as Jelani McCoy, considering his other numbers. For that reason it is hard to rank Orton too high. We can say that right now he looks like nothing more than a NBA journeyman. But there are enough unknowns about him to add some intrigue to his prospect status. An athletic big man who has shown flashes is never a bad gamble as the draft gets past the lottery stage. Orton’s potential isn’t anywhere near as impressive as Whiteside’s. On film, I find myself wondering what he was thinking with some passes, and I rarely have an answer. Orton gets frustrated too easily and can take himself out of games.
