Magic CEO Alex Martins tells fans franchise did all it could to keep
Dwight Howard
Orlando Magic Chief Executive Officer Alex Martins told fans the franchise
did everything possible to hold on to disgruntled All-Star center Dwight
Howard.
"We had extensive conversations in regard to his future in Orlando,
exhausting all possible options," Martins wrote about Howard in a letter
emailed to Magic season ticket holders Monday afternoon. "At the end of the
day, we were not able to receive a commitment from him beyond this season."
Howard was part of a four-team trade that shipped the Magic's marquee player
to the Los Angeles Lakers. He is slated to become a free agent at the end of
the 2012-13 season. Howard's agent, Dan Fegan, said the center would not
contract extension with any NBA teams.
"We certainly wish Dwight well and congratulate him on all his achievements
in Orlando," Martins wrote in the letter. "The Magic posted the fourth best
record in the NBA over the last five years, trailing just the L.A. Lakers,
Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs. Dwight was a six-time All-Star and
named All-NBA First Team each of the last five years, while also finishing as
the Most Valuable Player runner-up in 2011. His popularity in Orlando was
certainly unprecedented and we thank him for being a part of Magic history."
While some fans have objected to the trade and lamented Orlando seemed to get
little in exchange for the NBA's top center, Martins argued the franchise
made key moves necessary to succeed in the future.
The Magic received shooting guard Arron Afflalo and power forward Al
Harrington from the Denver Nuggets, center Nikola Vucevic and rookie small
forward Moe Harkless from the Philadelphia 76ers and power forward Josh
McRoberts and small forward Christian Eyenga from the Lakers.
Orlando also got five draft picks and gave up shooting guard Jason
Richardson, point guard Chris Duhon and power forward Earl Clark.
"A primary goal for our basketball team is to achieve long-term
sustainability while maintaining a long-term vision," Martins wrote. "We feel
this deal puts us in a position to begin building in that direction. In
addition to the six players joining our team, we will be in a position to
maximize our salary cap flexibility in the near future, as well as utilize
the multiple draft picks we have acquired going forward."
Martins reiterated the optimism Orlando Magic leaders have been projecting
since hiring new general manager Rob Hennigan and new head coach Jacque
Vaughn.
"We feel we have everything we need in Orlando to be successful, from
financially committed ownership to first-class facilities to outstanding
basketball leadership to fans with great passion who truly care," Martins
wrote. "We look forward to this next chapter of Magic basketball and remain
committed to our mission: To be world champions on and off the court,
delivering legendary moments every step of the way."
