They need his size and strength. The Pacers also are unlikely to make a trade that would increase their long-term salary obligation, which is precisely the kind of deal usually linked to Pollard. His is the type of contract the Pacers would rather acquire than trade away. Croshere, who has annually been the subject of trade speculation, could also play an important role this season. In the current frontcourt rotation, he and Jonathan Bender are the only power forwards behind Jermaine O'Neal. If Bender can't stay healthy, that leaves Croshere with the possibility of a regular role off the bench.
