Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle believes this is the time to focus on the
road ahead, not the debris in the rear-view mirror.
The Pacers might think that now, but at some point during a stretch in which
they play eight of their next 11 games on the road, they'll look back and
kick themselves for not taking care of their home court last month.
It was 41 days and 17 games ago that the Pacers thought they were finally
getting the break they needed.
They had survived a brutal early road schedule and were 20-19, the seventh
seed in the Eastern Conference but just three games behind Cleveland for the
best record in the conference.
More important, they were starting a stretch in which 14 of their next 17
games would be at home, with 10 of those games against losing teams.
With four new players in place, there was no better time to make their move
up the standings.
Fast-forward to today. The Pacers have lost their past three games and went
just 9-8 in the 17-game stretch, including 8-6 at Conseco Fieldhouse. They
moved up one spot to the sixth seed but slipped to 71/2 games behind Detroit
for the best record in the ever-so-wacky East.
The Pacers dropped three consecutive games to losing teams -- Golden State,
Seattle and Denver -- and they have given up at least 100 points in nine of
the past 10 games.
"I know guys aren't feeling good. They're not supposed to feel good," point
guard Darrell Armstrong said after Phoenix erased the Pacers' 18-point lead
to win Tuesday. "If you want to win games, you should hate to lose. It's a
learning experience."
The Pacers' playoff hopes could lie on what they do this month when they play
10 road games, starting Friday with a rematch against Phoenix in the first of
a four-game Western trip. The Pacers are 11-15 on the road this season.
"We've lost three in a row and they've all been kind of ugly games," center
Jeff Foster said. "We have a tough road ahead. We haven't really been on a
road trip yet with all these new guys. It's an opportunity for us to bond and
become a team. This is a tough schedule, but it could also be a blessing in
disguise. We'll see what happens."
