◎ Scott might tweak ineup tonight:
Hornets coach Byron Scott said he is considering changing the starting lineup
for tonight's game against the Miami Heat, possibly replacing the
increasingly ineffective Brandon Bass at power forward with either Marc
Jackson or rookie Cedric Simmons.
Bass, the 6-foot-8 second-year player out of LSU, has been inconsistent in
the three games he's started for the injured David West. He's averaging 4.7
points and 3.3 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game. In his first start last
Tuesday against Charlotte, Bass scored two points with three rebounds. One
night later against Detroit, he scored 12 points with seven rebounds, both
career-highs. Then on Saturday against Minnesota, Bass went scoreless on
0-for-4 shooting in 16 minutes with two fouls being the only other blimp on
his final stat line.
"That's just the problem with Brandon," Scott said. "He had an OK game the
first time he starts, and I understood that. The second game he played great
and then the third game he was nowhere to be found.
"I'm thinking about tweaking it (tonight), but I don't know yet. And I don't
know if I'll start Cedric or Marc. It just kind of depends right now."
Jackson, who's in his seventh year, can play power forward or center. He
played in his first game of the season Saturday, scoring six points with
three rebounds and three assists in 14 minutes after multiple hamstring
injuries forced him to miss the entire preseason and the first nine regular
season games.
Simmons has played in all 10 games, averaging 3.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in
14.5 minutes per game.
◎ Jackson's solid so far:
Scott said he likes what he's seen from Jackson, considering he returned to
the lineup Saturday after missing the entire preseason and first nine
regular season games.
"His conditioning is a little bit better than I thought, but it still has to
get better," Scott said. "But for the time that he played against Minnesota,
I thought he really helped us. I don't think we win that game if he doesn't
play.
"You could tell the first three or four possessions when he took his shot
that he was a little rusty. But you could tell in the second half that he
was a little more comfortable."
◎ Scott has yet to consider NBDL nominees:
Although the NBA Developmental League is preparing to open its season Friday,
Scott said he isn't thinking about which players from his roster he'd
consider sending to Tulsa.
"Like I said before, the NBDL is not on my mind right now," Scott said.
"That's not one of my main priorities. I'll think about that when it comes
up."
Rookie forward Marcus Vinicius, who has yet to play this season, figures to
be the leading candidate. Bass could also be sent down at some point this
season.
◎ Something's different:
After watching guard Chris Paul set a career-high in points twice in the past
two weeks, Scott said he's noticed one fundamental difference in his star
guard.
"He's getting to the point right now, and he didn't do this a lot last year,
where he's just taking over games," Scott said. "He wanted to make sure he
got everybody involved and kind of deferred to the older guys. But he's not
doing that anymore.
"If he sees a game that's getting out of hand and he knows that we need a
score at that particular time, he takes it upon himself to get a bucket for
us. That's the biggest difference in his game this year from last year. He's
carried us in some games. That's what elite players in this league do."
Paul is averaging a team-leading 19.3 points, 9.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds
in 36.1 minutes per game.
