He emphasized communicating well with his teammates will important. Most Curious about Pittsburgh? anxious about seeing PNC in person and curious his swing will work there. Admits it does look pretty big, Don’t know anything about the contract. Don’t know the money and also don’ t know if his agent requested a no minor league clause. He said for him it’s more about the challenge than the money. Will his skills work in the MLB? Baseball is baseball. I just need to take care of what I need to do and I think it’ll be OK. Need to study more about life outside of the game in the US. What do you think your strength is and will it translate in the MLB? I think the Pirates love the xtra base hits/long ball as do I, so I think that suits my strengths well. What do you know about the Pirates? I feel they’re a team with good chemistry and they get along real well. They have a good atmosphere. Q. Pittsburgh’ infield is pretty good. As long as they give me consistent opportunities I think I’ll be OK. my main goal is to not get injured and my second goal is contribute to the team the best I can. Amy specific goals? I haven’t meant the manager yet, so no plans yet There are talk your defense won’t work there? It all depends how quickly I can adjust there. I’ll work my Hardest to adjust quickly as I can. Talks about your swing kick? There many players with swing kicks in mlb. I have no plans to change how I play right now. Excited to face Chapman. Curious to see how great his fastball is. To be a great hitter you need to succeed against a pitcher like him Thoughts on competing for a starting infield spot As long as they give me consistent opportunities I think I can do well. What do u mean by consistent opportunities…? Spring camp is not the best time to judge a player so Hopefully up to the first half? If I don’t do well I’ll cleanly step down. So not nervous / feel in a rush? I want to give it a shot my way. Thoughts on position change? Need to talk to the team first. But my #1 preference is SS. Thoughts on being a MLB player? Excited at the challenge but will not be satisfied and keep working harder to get better and succeed Also joked his English will be better than his friend Ryu’s when he first got to the US From Brian Cartwright (developer Oliver @ FanGraphs) I have Mercer projected for the 16th best wOBA (301) among MLB shortstops and last year I had him as the 3rd best defensive SS in MLB. OTOH, Kang with a wOBA projection of 330-340 would rank around 3rd to 7th offensively, in a group of Ian Desmond, Jhonny Peralta and Xander Bogarts.
