Attendance hits 10 million in July
Minor League Baseball
ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Nearly 10 million fans went through the turnstiles
of Minor League Baseball teams during the month of July to push the
season total to 30,932,024. That is an increase of 1,142,143 (3.8%) over
the total achieved through July in 2004, when the 176 teams drew an
all-time record total of 39,887,755.
This year's total came over 7,741 playing dates for an average crowd of
3,996, an increase of 1 percent over last year on average per playing
date. The season opened one day early this year and better weather
conditions this year have resulted in fewer dates lost to Mother Nature.
The Triple-A International and Pacific Coast Leagues accounted for just
over 3 million fans in July and have almost identical average crowds. The
PCL, which is up 8.4 percent over 2004, leads with an average of 6,597,
just ahead of the IL's 6,575.
Other leagues with large increases include the South Atlantic (9.2%);
Appalachian (8.3%); Texas (7%) and California (7%). The Texas League
total of 2,167,564 was already the third highest in league history.
Texas League teams were averaging 5,198 fans, best among Double-A teams.
The Midwest League, with 3,550, topped the full season Single-A circuits,
while the New York-Penn (3,680) led the Short-Season leagues.
