http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5760306 C — Jeff Mathis — Salt Lake, Pacific Coast League (Angels) Age: 23 Acquired: 1st round, 2001, Marianna HS (Marianna, Fla.) 2006 top 100 rank: No. 95 Not much to choose from here. Mathis flopped in a 39-at bat trial at Anaheim this season (keep in mind the tee-niny sample size), but for the most part he's flashed a solid stick throughout his career. On the farm this season, he's hitting .286 AVG/.326 OBP/.424 SLG. However, those numbers are unimpressive at hitter-friendly Salt Lake. Mathis is a skilled defender at the plate, but unless he shows more consistency at the plate he'll wind up as a career backup. 1B — James Loney — Las Vegas, Pacific Coast League (Dodgers) Age: 22 Acquired: 1st round, 2002, Elkins HS (Missouri City, Texas) 2006 top 100 rank: Unranked Loney has always had the scouting reports in his favor, but a long string of injuries has dampened his production as a pro. Well, his long-anticipated breakout season is ongoing. This year, Loney ranks eighth in the PCL with a .415 OBP, and he ranks fifth with an SLG of .549. Las Vegas is a hitter's haven, and much of value this season is tied up in his .374 batting average. Still, it's good to see Loney healthy and hitting once again. 2B — Howie Kendrick — Salt Lake, Pacific Coast League (Angels) Age: 23 Acquired: 10th round, 2002, St. John's River Community College 2006 top 100 rank: No. 9 Kendrick didn't look good in an all-too-brief trial in Anaheim this season, but otherwise he's a potent offensive force. Coming into 2006, Kendrick was a career .359 hitter in four minor league seasons, and this year he's hitting .375 AVG/.415 OBP/.644 SLG at Salt Lake. He's one of the best prospects in the game right now, and considering Adam Kennedy's ongoing struggles Kendrick could soon be the starting second baseman in Anaheim for good. 3B — Andy Marte — Buffalo, International League (Indians) Age: 22 Acquired: Non-drafted free agent, 2000, Dominican Republic (by Braves) 2006 top 100 rank: No. 7 Marte, despite his substantial gifts, is on his third organization. However, he's squarely the third baseman of the future in Cleveland. Marte has impressive raw power, a command of the strike zone and good defensive skills at the hot corner. Marte got off to a slow start this season, but he's coming off a June in which he hit .321 AVG/.375 OBP/.704 SLG for the month. SS — Stephen Drew — Tucson, Pacific Coast League (Diamondbacks) Age: 23 Acquired: 1st round, 2004, Florida State 2006 top 100 rank: No. 23 Drew is hitting .285 AVG/.342 OBP/.459 SLG which is respectable but not outstanding for someone playing half his games in run-inducing Tucson. Drew may be suffering a bit from a rapid promotion schedule (he opened the year in the PCL despite never proving himself in Double-A), but long term he remains a strong prospect. OF — Chris Young — Tucson, Pacific Coast League (Diamondbacks) Age: 22 Acquired: 16th round, 2001, Bellaire HS (Bellaire, Texas) (by White Sox) 2006 top 100 Rank: No. 3 Acquired from the White Sox as part of the Javier Vazquez trade, Young has exceptional secondary hitting skills, speed on the bases and a tremendous glove in center. He got off to a slow start this season as he recovered from a broken hand, but he's been hitting since then. With Justin Upton in the fold and playing center, it's not certain what Young's long-term future will be, but he'll hit at any position and with any organization. OF — Carlos Quentin — Tucson, Pacific Coast League (Diamondbacks) Age: 23 Acquired: 1st round, 2003, Stanford 2006 top 100 rank: No. 34 Quentin's raw-power indicators are at times underwhelming, but he hits for average, plays a nifty right field and shows an exceptional command of the strike zone. This season, Quentin ranks seventh in the PCL in OBP, and he's tied for the league lead with 25 doubles. He'll open the 2007 season in the Arizona starting lineup. OF — Nelson Cruz — Nashville, Pacific Coast League (Brewers) Age: 25 Acquired: Non-drafted free agent, 1998, Dominican Republic (by Mets) 2006 top 100 rank: No. 94 Cruz is obviously a bit old for a premium prospect, but he could be a useful contributor at the highest level. He's a fastball hitter with good raw power and a history of strong walk rates. This season he's hitting .280 AVG/.369 OBP /.498 SLG, and could find himself in the mix for a starting job in Milwaukee if Carlos Lee is traded at the deadline. P — Jered Weaver — Salt Lake, Pacific Coast League (Angels) Age: 23 Acquired: 1st round, 2004, Long Beach State 2006 top 100 rank: No. 73 Weaver has been in top form this season. At Salt Lake, he's got a 1.95 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 83 innings. He spent some time in Anaheim earlier this season and was recalled in time to throw a gem against the Mariners on Tuesday. Thus far, his major league numbers are jaw dropping: 33.1 innings, 1.35 ERA, 31 strikeouts, 5 walks. If there's a concern going forward, it's how his fly- ball tendencies will be exploited by major league hitters. Still, so far so good for Weaver. P — Jeremy Sowers — Buffalo, International League (Indians) Age: 23 Acquired: 1st round, 2004, Vanderbilt 2006 top 100 rank: #26 Sowers, a lefty with middling velocity, has exceptional command and a plus- plus curve. Before his recent call-up to Cleveland, he was pacing the International League with a 1.39 ERA. He's not a strikeout guy, so he'll need a sound defense behind him in order to succeed. However, he has excellent control and doesn't beat himself. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.70.17.38
