http://projectprospect.com/article/2009/03/03/chicago-cubs-top-5 Chicago Cubs Top 5 by Josh Poore and Adam Foster March 3, 2009 Josh Vitters - Still just 19, Vitters looks to be the Cubs' third baseman of the future and should hit for power and average. His defense has been questioned ever since he was drafted, but he was impressive in Runs/150 last year (small sample - 140 chances). The third overall pick from the 2007 Draft, Vitters opened 2008 in Low-A before being sidelined by left hand tendonitis, an injury he endured while swinging. Had he spent the season in Low-A, he would have been among the 20-youngest players at the level. Instead, upon returning from his injury in June he was sent to short-season ball and stayed there. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder struck out in 16.2% of his 277 short-season plate appearances, while walking 4.7% and putting up a .170 isolated power. Largely because of his amateur track record, we still see Vitters as a decent breakout candidate entering the 2009 season. Jeff Samardzija - Last season, Samardzija brought his blazing fastball to the Chicago bullpen after an odd minor league career. His minor league strikeout rate is very abnormal: 9.4% in High-A, 13.4% in Double-A, 26.3% in Triple-A (152 TBF), and 20.2% in the bigs (124 TBF). Meanwhile, his walk rate rose from 7.1% in 2007 to 12.0% in 2008. Samardjiza has pitched 141.2 and 141.0 innings in each of the last two seasons, respectively. So he may have the endurance to surface as a starting pitcher in the bigs. But his excellent fastball/slider combo and lack of an effective changeup make him an appealing bullpen arm. Andrew Cashner - Cashner Reached High-A in his pro debut after being selected 19th overall out of the Texas Christian University. Has a plus fastball and plus slider, but the question remains if he is a starter or reliever in the long run.The 6-foot-5, 195 pound righty struggled against 85 short-season batters last year (22.4% BB, 18.8% K, 6.04 FIP) -- he struck out one of the 16 High-A batters he faced while walking four. While we were aware that Cashner was going to be a first round pick about a month before the 2008 Draft, we didn't view him as a guy with enough upside to warrant a Top 30 pick. It's very likely that he will be a reliever in pro ball. Hak-Ju Lee - Nothing but scouting reports at this point (report includes a photo), but Lee is said to be a plus runner with strong contact skills and the ability to stay at short. Only time will tell. Lee signed for $750,000 out of high school last summer Jay Jackson - Intelligent, atheltic power righty had a great professional debut. His fastball/slider combo could be seen in Chicago in short order and his future may be as a dominant setup man. Jackson totaled a 36.5% strikeout rate, 6.6% walk, and 2.26 FIP against 197 short-season, Low-A, and High-A hitters last season. He signed for close to slot money as the 281st overall pick of the 2008 Draft. Jackson is a fun wildcard. He could wind up being one of the biggest sleepers from last year's draft class. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 118.160.69.131
