[情報] Top 20 International Prospects
╭─ #01 - Gustavo Cabrera (DR) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Santo Domingo Norte, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'2" Weight: 190 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 01/23/1996 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Cabrera has dazzled scouts with his bat speed, hitting mechanics and raw
power but has also opened eyes with his instincts on the bases. In other
words, he can run, too. His all-around speed combined with his aggressive
style, strong arm and athletic body have brought about comparisons to Arizona
outfielder Justin Upton when he was the same age.
Cabrera’s prior experience in the United State could prove to be an advantage
in his development. Last year, he was named the MVP at the 2011 RBI World
Series in Minnesota and also participated in a showcase in Orlando with his
trainer. This year, he starred in the Dominican Prospect League and was part of
the league’s All-Star travel squad that played exhibition games and
participated in showcases at big league sites in Arizona and Florida during
Spring Training.
The biggest knock on Cabrera is the notion that he only has one gear: full
speed. He is still harnessing his skills and working on the fine art of
playing under control.

╭─ #02 - Franklin Barreto (VE) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Turmero, Venezuela │
│ Height: 5'9" Weight: 174 │
│ Position: SS DOB: 02/27/1996 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Scouts love Barreto’s defense and natural instincts when the young
Venezuelan has a glove in his hands. He’s also gained praise for his
approach at the plate -- specifically, the ability to hit line drives to all
parts of the field. He is not the biggest shortstop -- 5-foot-9, 175 pounds
-- but he has a solid build and a strong body. He also has above-average
speed and has emerged as one of the top teenage talents in all of Latin
America because of his tools set.
Barreto starred in MLB-sponsored showcases in his country and traveled to the
Dominican Republic last February along with 24 other prospects from Venezuela
to take part in the first MLB prospect showcase to feature the top 50
prospects from Venezuela and Dominican Republic. His performance at the
two-day showcase, held at the Mets’ complex in Boca Chica, only solidified
his status as one of the top prospects on the international market.
Barreto is trained by Ciro Barrios in the northern Venezuelan city of Turmero.
==============================================================================
╭─ #03 - Jairo Beras (DR) ────────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Boca Chica, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'5" Weight: 178 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 12/25/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Beras possesses all the attributes scouts love in young prospects. He has
plus bat speed, raw power and a projectable body. He could end up as corner
outfielder when he fills out completely, but he has the speed to play center
field. Beras is a five-tool player and will only improve with more seasoning.
Think: a teenage Juan Gonzalez.
The prospect’s status remains in question. Major League Baseball has been
reviewing the prospect's documentation since the beginning of March to
determine his age before the league will approve his $4.5 million agreement
with the Rangers.
Beras was listed with a birth date of Dec. 25, 1995, in February’s MLB
prospect showcase in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. That age makes him
ineligible to sign until the international signing period begins on July 2.
The Rangers say Beras is 17, which suggests they believe the teenager is not
subject to the new international signing guidelines.
===============================================================================
╭─ #04 - Amaurys Minier (DR) ──────────────────────╮
│ │
│ San Cristobal, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'2" Weight: 190 │
│ Position: SS DOB: 01/30/1996 Bats: S Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Minier wants to stay in the infield, but he might not be athletic enough to
remain there, and his body-type might be better suited for the outfield. He
can hit for power from both sides of the plate, and it’s this power that
should allow him to make the transition to a corner outfield spot.
The teenager spends his offseason working out with Yankees catching prospect
Gary Sanchez and is developing a routine that should help him when he makes
the transition from an amateur player to a professional athlete.
One of the top prospects in the Dominican Prospect League, Minier was part of
the league’s All-Star travel squad that played in exhibition games and
participated in showcases at big league sites in Arizona and Florida during
Spring Training. He also played for the D.R. in the MLB prospect showcase in
February.
===============================================================================
╭─ #05 - Wendell Rijo (DR) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ La Romana, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 5'11" Weight: 170 │
│ Position: SS/2B DOB: 09/04/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The son of a Major League scout, the infielder knows the game and has been
praised for his outstanding makeup. Considered undersized by some, Rijo does
not blow scouts away with his physical tools and is far from a "tryout baby,"
but he excels in game situations in large part because of his natural instincts
and knowledge.
A star in the Dominican Prospect League, Rijo has plus range, a quick release
at shortstop and an average arm. He’s also recognized as a team leader.
Rijo was named to the league’s All-Star travel squad and was slated to play
in exhibition games and participate in showcases at big league sites in
Arizona and Florida during Spring Training, but his trip was cut short when
he sprained his knee in a game at the Red Sox Complex in Florida. Earlier in
the year, he represented his country in the MLB prospect showcase in Boca
Chica, Dominican Republic.
===============================================================================
╭─ #06 - Luis Torrens (VE) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela │
│ Height: 6'0" Weight: 171 │
│ Position: 3B DOB: 05/02/1996 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The teenager’s reputation as a solid defender has made him one of the most
sought after prospects in Latin America. From Venezuela, Torrens is six-foot
and weighs 171 pounds, and he continues to develop as an all-around hitter.
He just looks like a future big leaguer, scouts say, and one scout went as
far as to call him “a young David Wright.” That said, Torrens’ position in
the future could still be up in the air. He has the power bat scouts are
looking for and profiles as a third baseman but might not have all of the
tools to stay there.
Torrens, who is trained by Carlos Rios and Melian in Puerto La Cruz, traveled
to the Dominican Republic last February to take part in the MLB prospect
showcase. Born on May 2, 1996, he is on track to sign a deal with a big
league club two months after his 16th birthday.
===============================================================================
╭─ #07 - Alexander Palma (VE) ──────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Maracay, Venezuela │
│ Height: 6'0" Weight: 201 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 10/18/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Scouts like the young Venezuelan’s strong body and athletic build. Palma has
also impressed the industry with a good bat speed, power at the plate and his
baseball instincts. He profiles as a right fielder and is deceptively fast on
the base paths. One scout described Palma by saying, "He’s not a plus
runner but he’s not a base-clogger, either."
Palma splashed on to the international scene when he starred for Venezuela at
World Championships in Mexico last August. A veteran of the MLB showcases in
Venezuela, Palma traveled to the Dominican Republic last February to take
part in the MLB prospect showcase.
As a participant in the baseball academy belonging to former Major League
infielder Carlos Guillen, the 6-foot, 201-pound Palma has been exposed to
some of the best instruction and facilities in Latin America. The newly
retired Guillen now spends most of his free time working with young
Venezuelan prospects like Palma, preparing them for a life in professional
baseball.
===============================================================================
╭─ #08 - Jose Mujica (VE) ────────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Maracay, Venezuela │
│ Height: 6'2" Weight: 180 │
│ Position: RHP DOB: 06/29/1996 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Best described as having a “loose arm,” the right-handed teenager is tall
and lean with nice delivery. Developed by former Major Leaguer Carlos Guillen
in his academy in Venezuela, the young pitcher projects as a starter and has
received some of the best instruction in Latin America. Scouts like his arm
strength and say he throws “a heavy ball” that makes it tough for hitters
to hit his pitches cleanly. A confident teen, Mujica isn’t the most vocal
player in the dugout but he leads by example.
Undaunted by the big stage, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Mujica shined in the
Dominican Republic last February when he took part in the MLB prospect
showcase with the top prospects from Venezuela and Dominican Republic. Part
of Guillen’s job, say the longtime Major Leaguer, is to prepare prospects
like Mujica for life on and off the field as a professional athlete, and the
pitcher is a quick study. The former big league infielder has been impressed
with Mujica’s poise and maturity. He says Mujica's aggressiveness reminds
him of former teammates Felix Hernandez and a young Freddy Garcia.
===============================================================================
╭─ #09 - Richard Urena (DR) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ San Francisco de Macoris, D.R. │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 160 │
│ Position: SS DOB: 02/26/1996 Bats: L Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Known for his good glove and ability to put the ball in play, Urena has
outstanding range up the middle and can make the flashy plays in addition to
the routine ones. The infielder has grown physically over the past few
months, and his tools continue to improve right alongside his development.
Although he lacks raw power, his other skills are comparable to Kansas City
prospect Adalberto Mondesi, the son of former Major Leaguer Raul Mondesi.
Considered one of the top shortstops to play in the Dominican Prospect
League, Urena was a member of the league’s All-Star travel squad that played
games and put on showcases at big league sites during Spring Training in
Arizona and Florida.
Soft-spoken and humble, Urena has been praised for his good makeup and
overall character. He works out in San Pedro de Macoris, the city famous for
producing big league shortstops, but he lives in San Francisco de Macoris
with his mother, who raised him after his father passed away when he was a
young child.
===============================================================================
╭─ #10 - Frandy De La Rosa (DR) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Comendador, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 180 │
│ Position: SS DOB: 01/24/1996 Bats: S Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The switch-hitter has a good feel for hitting and good hands on defense but
will need to continue to develop his tools and build strength if he wants to
stay in the infield. For now, his makeup and ability to hit from both sides
of the plate are what scouts find the most attractive about the young
infielder. Scouts have praised his soft hands but have expressed some concern
about his running and throwing abilities.
De La Rosa is from Elias Pina, near the Haitian border, and moved to Boca
Chica because his mother believed the larger city could provide more
opportunities for her son develop as a baseball player. Educated and
grounded, De La Rosa’s good makeup works in his favor. He is considered
mature for his age and could develop into a leader.
A star in the Dominican Prospect League, De La Rosa was a member of the league
’s All-Star travel squad that played games and put on showcases at big
league sites during Spring Training.
===============================================================================
╭─ #11 - Nathanael Javier (DR) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'3" Weight: 185 │
│ Position: 3B DOB: 10/10/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Javier comes from a baseball family. The younger brother of Sony Javier, a
prospect with Toronto, and the son of Narciso Tapia, a trainer in the Boca
Chica area, baseball is in the young prospect’s blood.
The big third baseman is considered a solid all-around player and is
projected to hit for average and power in the future. He has impressed scouts
with his large body frame, lean muscle mass and high baseball IQ. He appears
to have the perfect body for third base but might have to move to first base
if he gets too big to play the position.
Some believe the 6-ft-3, 185-pound Javier is second only to Gustavo Cabrera
and Wendell Rijo in terms of upside and overall talent. Javier just might
have all the tools Major League scouts look for in a prospect, and he has the
potential to be a special bat with plus power.
Trained by Basilio Vizcaino in Santo Domingo, Javier starred in the Dominican
Prospect League and was a member of the league’s All-Star travel squad that
at big league camps during Spring Training.
===============================================================================
╭─ #12 - Luis Castro (VE) ────────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 187 │
│ Position: SS DOB: 09/19/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Scouts like Castro’s all-around game, although some believe he is headed for
a position change in the future. The Venezuelan teen has been praised for his
quick feet and good bat speed, but it’s unclear whether his actions are good
enough to stay in the middle infield and if he has enough power to play first
base or third base. Scouts do like his line-drive approach at the plate, and
although he only has doubles power now, his overall power could increase as
he develops.
The 6-foot-1, 187-pound shortstop is among the biggest middle infielders on
the market and will only continue to grow. This overall development could
bode well for him if he needs to transition to the outfield. Castro is
trained by Jose Aguilar in the Venezuelan city of Ciudad Bolivar and was part
of the Venezuelan team that played in the MLB prospect showcase in Boca Chica,
Dominican Republic, in February
===============================================================================
╭─ #13 - Luis Barrera (DR) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Tamboril, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 180 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 11/15/1995 Bats: L Throws: L │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The outfielder can hit and has shown some power but is not as proficient in
the other parts of his game. He has expressed an eagerness to learn and
improve his skills, which could help him overcome some of his physical
limitations. A natural athlete, Barrera needs to work on his hitting
mechanics and routes in the outfield, but both should improve as he continues
to develop.
Scouts do like his left-handed hitting ability and swing. He’s also opened a
few eyes with displays of power during batting practice but also raised a few
eyebrows with inconsistent throws that are sometimes hard for the infielders
to handle.
Barrera, who is 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, is trained by Kiko Pena in the
Dominican Republic town of Tamboril. He was a member of the Dominican
Prospect League’s All-Star travel squad.
===============================================================================
╭─ #14 - Ronny Carvajal (DR) ──────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Bani, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'3" Weight: 180 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 10/09/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Six words: Big body. Power bat. Good athlete.
Scouts like the teenager’s swing, his body frame and his strong arm from
right field, but he remains a work in progress. He’s best described as raw,
and he needs to improve on his overall approach at the plate.
Carvajal’s good makeup and work ethic work in his favor. He also has a high
projection ceiling because of his easy actions and natural size. However, his
mechanics at the plate need to be refined, and the flaws are keeping him from
reaching his potential as a hitter. That said, there are high hopes for the
young outfielder, and he should improve when he’s put into a Major League
farm system and receives daily instruction.
A member of the Dominican Prospect League’s All-Star travel squad , Carvajal
also suited up for the Dominican Republic in the MLB prospect showcase in
February.
===============================================================================
╭─ #15 - Julio De La Cruz (DR) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Santiago, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 190 │
│ Position: 3B DOB: 10/05/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
De La Cruz is an advanced hitter with a mature approach at the plate and has
been praised for his good makeup. An average defender, he has a strong arm
and should stay at the position as long as he continues to develop.
Scouts like De La Cruz’s mature body, specifically his muscle tone and
flexibility. A star in the Dominican Prospect League, the infielder has shown
the ability to complete against quality pitching and continues to improve on
defense. He separated himself in the dugout because of his leadership skills
and baseball aptitude.
A member of the Dominican Republic team in the MLB prospect showcase, De La
Cruz was also part of Dominican Prospect League’s All-Star travel squad that
played games and put on showcases at big league sites during Spring Training
in Arizona and Florida.
He trains in the Dominican Republic city of Santiago with former Major
Leaguer Luis Polonia.
===============================================================================
╭─ #16 - Jose Pujols (DR) ────────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'3" Weight: 175 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 09/29/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Athletic, with a strong arm that might eventually land him in right field,
the teenage outfielder has also displayed raw power at the plate. However, he
remains an enigma because of an inconsistent approach and the fact that he
sometimes seems lost when in the batter’s box, even during batting practice.
Some think Pujols’ biggest issue is his belief that he has to hit every ball
out of the park and the mixed results that come with the all-or-nothing
approach. At times, he shows plus-plus power along with natural throwing and
running abilities that would make him among the top prospects on the
international market, but there is a concern that he might not make enough
contact to stay in a lineup on a regular basis.
Pujols’ natural abilities make him attractive to scouts, and he could pay
dividends once he receives regular instruction in a Major League farm system.
Strong performances in Florida and Arizona for the Dominican Prospect League
All-Star travel squad during Spring Training have some scouts believing that
Pujols is starting to put his game together.
===============================================================================
╭─ #17 - Deivi Grullon (DR) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Bonao, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'1" Weight: 180 │
│ Position: C DOB: 02/17/1996 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
A defensive-minded catcher with some power, Grullon is trained by catching
guru Luis Coronado, and some believe he could be the next Wilin Rosario
(Rockies prospect). Grullon has a solid body, is built like a catcher and has
plus arm strength. He has solid blocking skills but needs to improve on his
defensive techniques and sometimes makes plays more difficult than they
should be because he relies too heavily on his natural abilities.
The best catching prospect to ever come play in the Dominican Prospect
League, Grullon has also built a reputation for his gap-to-gap hitting
prowess in games and awe-inspiring batting practice sessions.
A member of the Dominican Republic team in the MLB prospect showcase ,
Grullon was also part of Dominican Prospect League’s All-Star travel squad
that played during Spring Training in Arizona and Florida.
===============================================================================
╭─ #18 - Jose Castillo (VE) ───────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Valencia, Venezuela │
│ Height: 6'4" Weight: 199 │
│ Position: LHP DOB: 01/10/1996 Bats: L Throws: L │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The first thing you notice about Castillo is his size, and the second thing
that stands out about the tall left-hander is his poise on mound. But it’s
his arm strength and smooth delivery that make the Venezuelan teen one of the
most coveted lefties on the international market. He projects as a starter
and should continue to improve when he fine tunes his mechanics and his body
fills out.
Castillo, who is 6-foot-4 and 199 pounds, starred in MLB-sponsored showcases
in his country and traveled to the Dominican Republic last February from
Venezuela to take part in the MLB prospect showcase. He is from the
baseball-rich city of Valencia, Venezuela, and is trained by Felix Olivo.
===============================================================================
╭─ #19 - Juan Carlos Arias (DR) ─────────────────────╮
│ │
│ San Pedro, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'3" Weight: 199 │
│ Position: 3B DOB: 09/16/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
Scouts love his raw power -- one described him as having thunder in his bat
-- and Arias has also impressed the industry with his big body and arm
strength, but some wonder about his consistency at the plate and his overall
approach when he’s in the batter’s box.
The 6-foot-3, 199-pound Arias projects to play both corner infield positions,
and, like most teens, he remains a work in progress. From San Pedro de
Macoris, he is represented by Arias and Goodman and was a member of the
Dominican Republic team in the first MLB prospect showcase in Boca Chica,
Dominican Republic, in February.
===============================================================================
╭─ #20 - Euri Minaya (DR) ────────────────────────╮
│ │
│ Boca Chica, Dominican Republic │
│ Height: 6'4" Weight: 202 │
│ Position: OF DOB: 10/11/1995 Bats: R Throws: R │
│ │
╰─────────────────────────────────────╯
The young outfielder is one of the most intriguing prospects on the market.
Scouts like Minaya’s big body, big arm and big power, but they also know he
needs a lot of work and time to develop. He is as raw as prospects come, but
he could pay big dividends in the future, once he receives regular
instruction.
There’s a belief that Minaya needs to become a better baseball player, but
he should make progress on that front once he is put into a Major League farm
system. In February, the 6-foot-4, 202-pound Minaya was a member of the
Dominican Republic team in the MLB prospect showcase in Boca Chica, Dominican
Republic. Minaya should have felt at home at the showcase -- he's from Boca
Chica and is trained by Valentin Monero.
