At 6’1", 205, Smith profiles best at first baseman according to many scouts.
To me, that just seems like a waste. He is a very good athlete and could be a
solid corner outfielder. He is quick enough to play there and he sure as hell
has the arm. At the WWBA this fall, he even spent a little time behind the
dish as a lefty catcher. He has a rocket for an arm and as another trick, he
has a fastball that tops out at 93 and has one of the better sliders of the
class. Yet his future is clearly at the plate.
One of the best pure hitters of the class, Smith just squares everything up.
He floats out on his front foot sometimes, but I don’t care. He just drops
the head of the bat on it and it goes 330’. He understands the strike zone
and shouldn’t strike out as much as a typical power hitter does due to his
sound approach and great hand-eye coordination.
Smith looks like a future star. He will likely be a corner outfielder early
in his career, then migrate to first base at some point as he gets older and
loses mobility. His size and potential remind me a little of Astros prospect
Jonathan Singleton. He has a fall back option of the mound but I really don’
t think that will ever need to be considered with the way he swings the bat.
He could be a top 10 pick in the draft and should go in the top 15 for sure.
If he doesn't sign, he is committed to Southern California.
