Chris Okey, C, Eustis, FL
High School Senior
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
HT/WT: 6'/175
Birthdate: 12/29/94 Age at Draft: 18.57
Chris Okey is not a typical backstop at 6', 175 LBS. He is smaller but also
more athletic than most catchers. He is a tick above average runner and could
handle an outfield spot or even second or third base potentially, but he has
the defensive chops to stick behind the dish. He has an above average arm and
a quick release generating pop times that are consistently above average. His
footwork needs some work but it's nothing an athletic kid can't work out.
At the plate, he generates very good bat speed that could produce average
power down the line. He hits the ball square and hard and should hit a ton on
doubles. He has a good approach at the plate.
Okey is intriguing as an athlete behind the dish who has clean actions, a
strong arm and a strong build. While he isn't a huge kid, he doesn't look
frail. He has enough bat to be an average backstop offensively. If he can't
work out the intricacies of catching, he has the athleticism of falling back
on other positions.
While you can dream that he will be a Jason Kendall type backstop or turn
into the next Craig Biggio, he does face a tough road as a prep backstop.
Historically, that is not an easy demographic for success, but I really have
a good feeling about Okey. If he doesn't sign, he will head up to Clemson.
