BA Today: Tate, Urias And LSU’s Political Issue

In BA Today, John Manuel talks Dillon Tate, Julio Urias and how the potential
deep budget cuts at LSU could affect the baseball program. Editor’s Note: To
clarify, the LSU budget situation is in its early, preliminary stages, and a
lot of state politics are involved. School president and chancellor F. King
Alexander has definitely sounded the alarm about the potential for a financial
exigency program for the school, which would be the academia version of
declaring bankruptcy, but it’s hard to tell how much of this is politics and
how deep the budget cuts may be. The state legislature, like many legislatures
around the country, is facing a budget crunch and LSU could be affected, but as
stated in the video, the athletic department remains one of the most profitable
in college athletics. Baseball is a major part of that, leading the nation in
attendance every year for 18 straight seasons (and headed for No. 19 this year
). The university went through major upheavals after Hurricane Katrina (2005)
and the Gulf oil spill (April 2010), which affected the state’s oil revenues,
and both times the baseball program weathered the difficult financial times.
