Bench coach Don Wakamatsu is the strongest candidate to replace Buck Showalter as the manager of the Rangers. The Rangers will look both inside and outside the organization, and owner Tom Hicks has told general manager Jon Daniels to "cast the widest net possible." But the Rangers have already begun narrowing down the candidates, and club officials have confirmed that Wakamatsu, who has a strong relationship with Daniels, the organization and the players, is likely the strongest possibility going into the search. Hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo will also get consideration, as will former farm director Trey Hillman, who was considered four years ago when Showalter was hired and left a strong impression with Hicks. Outside candidates will be considered, possibly Angels pitching coach Bud Black and Athletics third base coach Ron Washington. Former Florida manager Joe Girardi is also a hot name right now. The Rangers don't appear interested in Dusty Baker or Lou Piniella, but that doesn't mean they won't consider a veteran manager who has a record of success, especially after the success that Jim Leyland had with the Detroit Tigers this season. The Rangers might even think big and shoot for a former World Series winner, such as Tom Kelly, who won twice with the Minnesota Twins, or Cito Gaston, who won twice with the Toronto Blue Jays. But Wakamatsu will likely be a difficult candidate to beat. Whoever it is, the Rangers will look for someone who has strong communication skills with players. In the end, Showalter lost his job because, Hicks said, the players had stopped listening to his message and had tuned him out. "It was just our belief that Buck was unable to be as effective with the players as he had been a few years ago and needed to be in order to win," Hicks said. "The thing about sports is, in the end, the win-loss record is staring at you every day. "In the end, J.D. was very persuasive that with the nucleus of players, if we were going to win, we needed a fresh approach. Most managers or coaches, whatever the sport, there is a period of time where your message is effective." Hicks compared Showalter with Ken Hitchcock, who led the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup in 1999 and was dismissed two years later. "We won the Stanley Cup and two years later, the players had tuned him out," he said. "Whatever was working two years ago with Buck did not work now. Baseball is a very tough business. Buck is a great guy, a great friend and a great human being. He couldn't be more loyal to the Rangers." Hicks said that the decision was made before he and Daniels met with Showalter on Tuesday night. Showalter said that he has a hard time believing he had any problems with his players and that he did not see his dismissal coming. "I can't tell you one guy that I thought I had a bad relationship with, who came into my office and said anything about it," Showalter said. "All except Hank Blalock, who wasn't happy when I said he wasn't going to play against left-handers. Nobody said anything, not once. "I heard from a lot of players today." Showalter was the Rangers' manager for four years, compiling a record of 319-329. The Rangers went 89-73 in 2004, and Showalter was named American League Manager of the Year. But they went 79-83 in 2005 and 80-82 in 2006. "We didn't win," Showalter said. "It happens. The record is right there. I had an opportunity to go two or three different places, and this is where I wanted to go. I knew the risks coming in. I'm a big boy. I can handle it." Showalter previously managed the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both teams won the year after he left the organization. Asked if he would ever manage again, he said, "If they win next year, I'll definitely get a job." T.R. Sullivan is a reporter for MLB.com.
