It added up to the trade that sent Kevin Millwood to Baltimore, allowing the Rangers to sign Rich Harden (OK, that didn’t work out) and Colby Lewis (how did that one go?) and left enough money to grab DH Vladimir Guerrero in January. It was the kind of deal that made short- and long-term sense, which is why the Rangers were more aggressive in their pursuit of Hamels than more definitive contenders at the time, such as the NY Yankees and Los Angeles. In Hamels and reliever Jake Diekman, acquired at the same time, the club added two key pitchers for multiple years of control.
