http://www.draftcity.com/articles/0055.htm Toronto: (Aaron Bronsteter) Round 1: Rafael Araujo, BYU (#8) Round 2: Pape Sow, PF, UC-Fullerton (traded for the #40, Albert Miralles to Miami) Grade: C+ I am usually extremely critical of my home town Raptors, but when the #7 rolled around, I was praying for Deng to drop and that Chicago was picking Luke Jackson to package for Al Harrington. As time progressed and there were 6 seconds before Chicago picked, I said confidently "There's no way Paxson passes up a perfect draft of Gordon and Deng, they're taking Deng" and I was correct. Then as the Raptors' clock was ticking down to about 20 seconds, I said to my friend next to me, "They're either trading down, hopefully with Utah for 14 and 16, picking Pavel or Araujo." Araujo it was and I was satisfied with the pick. Many of Toronto's fan base were screaming for new GM Rob Babcock's head on a stick and he was vehemently booed at the Air Canada Centre draft party. But think of it this way, if you are picking at #8, every coveted point guard except for Nelson and Telfair is gone and big men in this league are impossible to come across at an affordable rate, you've gotta go big. When watching Chris Bosh get eaten up like by Eddy Curry and Jahidi White, the Raptors needed to do something about it. Rafael Araujo is 6'11" and 292 pounds. He is an imposing force in the paint who is not afraid to show toughness to put an exclamation point on his basketball skills. He is NBA-ready at age 23 (turning 24 in a few weeks) and will be able to bang with the NBA's finest centers. He is a perfect fit for the Raptors and the only reason they lose points is for not being able to trade down. At their position, with the players left on the board, he may not have been the best player potential or talent-wise, but he was easily the best fit for a physically weak Raptors team. In the 2nd round, trading Albert Miralles for Pape Sow was a calculated maneuver on Mr. Babcock's part. Getting a decently skilled big man is a good decision. Sow is someone who will have to prove himself for a roster spot, but will definitely give it all he's got.
