Upton could miss start of season
ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (TICKER)—Tampa Bay Rays outfielder B.J. Upton,
recovering from left shoulder surgery, indicated Wednesday that he could miss
the start of the season.
Upton underwent surgery on November 11 to repair the labrum in his non-throwing
shoulder.
After working out for team officials Wednesday at Tropicana Field, Upton said
he hoped to be ready for Opening Day, but also was a bit cautious.
“If not, hopefully (I'll be ready”when they get back off the road from
playing (Boston and Baltimore),”Upton told MLB.com.“They said cold weather is
probably going to be an issue with it. It's probably going to make it ache a
little bit. I'm going to be careful with it, so hopefully when they get back
off the road, I can start up.”
Tampa Bay, coming off its first World Series appearance, opens its season at
Boston on April 6. The Rays play their home opener a week later against the New
York Yankees.
Upton did say his shoulder is progressing from the surgery, which was performed
by Dr. James Andrews.
“(It's) coming along a lot faster than we thought it would,”Upton said.“But
at the same time, we can't rush it. Every time I come in, it feels better and
better. So as long as we can keep doing what we're doing right now, it should
be good.”
Upton, 24, hit .273 with nine homers, 67 RBI and a career-high 44 stolen bases
last season.
