[Note] Hernandez to start Rays' spring opener
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Manager Joe Maddon announced Saturday that Carlos
Hernandez will be the Rays' starter for Wednesday's Spring Training opener
against the Reds at Charlotte County Park.
"This fellow here I find intriguing, from what he's done in the past with
Houston," Maddon said.
The 28-year-old left-hander signed with Tampa Bay on July 28 and made six
starts at Class A Vero Beach, where he posted a 2-1 mark with a 1.04 ERA, and
opposing batters hit just .131 against him.
Hernandez has made 35 Major League appearances with the Astros -- 33 were
starts -- and has a 9-8 record with a 4.54 ERA.
The Rays' regular rotation of Scott Kazmir, James Shields, Matt Garza and
Andy Sonnanstine is on a slower program, so they won't be seeing early
starts.
Maddon said the starting lineup will feature some players from the regular
lineup.
