ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays re-signed relief pitcher Winston Abreu to a Minor League contract Thursday, little more than two months after trading him to Cleveland for right-hander John Meloan. Abreu, who was designated for assignment by the Indians on Saturday, will report to Triple-A Durham on Friday. He pitched in three games with Cleveland and allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings. He was also suspended three games for hitting Seattle third baseman Jack Hannahan with a pitch on July 27. Abreu, a 32-year-old right-hander, began the season with Durham after being signed by the Rays in the offseason, and he was called up on June 14 to replace injured reliever Jason Isringhausen. He appeared in two games with Tampa Bay and allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings but was designated for assignment when the Rays activated Chad Bradford off the disabled list on June 27. Abreu was then traded to the Indians on July 2. "This young man has pitched very well," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Abreu after he was initially sent down in June. "He's done a great job for us in Durham.
