The incident took place during the afternoon hours of Jan. 22 and left Bellatti -- selected by the Rays in the 12th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft-- with what The St. Petersburg Times described as "minor injuries, including cuts and bruises on his face." California police officials told nbcsandiego.com that the 18-year-old Bellatti was speeding at 80 mph and illegally crossed a double yellow line into oncoming traffic near his former San Diego-area high school, Steele Canyon. His 2007 Ford Mustang then hit a Dodge Caravan, killing 50-year-old David Reid, who was driving,and seriously injuring Reid's 17-year-old son,Garrett.Bellatti' s passenger, a 16-year-old described as his girlfriend, was also injured, reports stated. According to a recent story by The San Diego Union-Tribune, Garrett--a Steele Canyon High senior--underwent surgery and was released by the hospital shortly after the crash. His wrist had been crushed in four places, and he suffered a skull fracture and a broken toe, the newspaper added. At the time, the Tribune wrote that"drugs and alcohol are not a factor"in what caused Bellatti to swerve across the road. Steele Canyon High School honored David Reid with a memorial service on Sunday. "He is heartbroken," Bellatti's agent, Jonathan Weisz, told the Tribune. "It's a tragedy that will impact both families the rest of their lives." Bellatti pitched in 12 games (three of them starts) for the Rays' Gulf Coast League team this summer, going 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families affected by this terrible tragedy," Rays vice president of communications Rick Vaughn told the Times.
