Rays invite 3 more to spring training http://tinyurl.com/yh5k2em The Tampa Bay Rays picked up right-handed pitcher Mike Ekstrom off waivers from San Diego and added him to the 40-man roster. Also, the team signed catcher Alvin Colina and left-handed pitcher Heath Phillips to minor league contracts with an invitation to major league spring training. The 26-year-old Ekstrom made 20 relief appearances during the past two seasons for San Diego. Last year, he pitched in 12 games. He spent the remainder of the season with Triple A Portland, where he went 4-2 with a 1.73 earned run average in 42 appearances, one start. A four-time minor league all-star, Ekstrom was the Padres minor league Pitcher of the Year in 2006 after being selected in the 12th round of the 2004 draft. The 28-year-old Colina spent the last season with Triple A Gwinnett in the Atlanta organization. He hit .262 with eight home runs and 42 runs batted in during 67 games. He previously appeared in the majors in 2006 with Colorado. The 27-year-old Phillips spent all of last season with Triple A Omaha in the Kansas City organization. He went 8-7 with a 4.99 ERA in 27 appearances (25 starts). He previously pitched in the majors in 2007 with the Chicago White Sox, who selected him in the 10th round of the 2000 draft.
