[Note] Rays ink five to Minor League deals
The Rays added some organizational depth on Thursday, signing five players to
Minor League deals.
Among those Tampa Bay inked were infielders Russ Canzler and J.J. Furmaniak,
right-handers Richard De Los Santos and Cory Wade and left-hander R.J. Swindle.
De Los Santos, who led the International League in wins (14) last season for
Triple-A Durham, will remain with the organization. The 26-year-old went 14-5
with a 3.52 ERA as a starter in 2010.
His Bulls teammate Swindle will also return after a strong season out of
Durham's bullpen. The 27-year-old Minor League veteran owned a 2.45 ERA
in 40 appearances last season.
Wade, who was previously a member of the Dodgers' organization, missed the early
portion of last season with a shoulder injury. He later returned to pitch in
relief for Los Angeles' Triple-A Albuquerque affiliate, going 3-0 with two saves
and a 4.91 ERA.
Canzler hit 21 homers for Double-A Tennessee last season as a member of the
Cubs' organization and brings some pop with him to the Rays. A versatile
infielder, the 24-year-old owns a .272 career Minor League batting average.
Furmaniak, another utility player, split last season between the Rays' Double-A
Montgomery and Durham clubs. The 31-year-old has two short Major League stints
under his belt, having played briefly with the Pirates in 2005 and the A's in
'07.
