BOSTON -- Rays left fielder Carl Crawford was back in the lineup Wednesday
night for the second consecutive night, despite some pain in his left
shoulder.
Crawford made his first start in left field Tuesday night since irritating
his shoulder against the Padres on June 23. The speedster returned to the
lineup with a bang, going 4-for-5 to boost his average to .315 for the
season. He also made four throws, each of which caused some discomfort.
"I don't think it's anything real bad," Crawford said. "It's probably going
to take a while before it starts feeling better. ... I'll just have to battle
through it right now."
Crawford simplified the math when asked at what percentage of his regular
throws he was throwing.
"Whatever you saw [Tuesday] night is probably what I'll be doing for a little
while," he said.
Manager Joe Maddon said they are relying on Crawford to let them know if the
pain is not manageable or if he feels like his shoulder is getting worse. For
now, Crawford is prepared to deal with some pain in order to play.
"You know it's going to hurt [when you make a throw], so you just try to put
as much on it as possible and you hope that it doesn't go wild like it did
[Tuesday] night," Crawford said. "[On] the ball down the line, I almost threw
that one away. I have to really focus on how I'm throwing the ball and where
my arm is positioned and all that stuff. It's hard to do when you have guys
running full speed around the bases.
"It doesn't really hurt that much when I'm swinging. But the throws are a
different story. I don't know why it's like that."
