[Note] Inbox: Can Rays re-sign big free agents?
What do you think the chances are that the Rays will sign any of their big
three free agents -- Carl Crawford, Rafael Soriano or Carlos Pena?
-- Don, St. Petersburg
It's a hard question to answer. On the surface, you've got to think all three
will be gone, because the team plans to cut the payroll. But depending on
what the market bears, maybe Soriano or Pena could return, given the right
circumstances. Crawford is the one guy from the group I don't think will be
back, based on the speculation I've heard about him and what he might make.
As for Pena and Soriano, I think any chance for either of them returning will
be driven by the market. How many teams want a slugger who is a former Gold
Glove first baseman and is a leader? Will they be willing to overlook Pena's
average? If other teams aren't biting, he might be willing to take a one- or
two-year deal to remain with a team he likes in an area he's fond of. Same
thing goes with Soriano. And given the nature of the bullpen with all of the
free agents the Rays have, starting with a closer might be money well spent
if they don't have to serve up some sort of mega multiyear deal. Again, this
is a tough call to make and one that might take a while to play out, based on
the market.
I watched Desmond Jennings play when he came up in September, and I'm not so
certain he can just step in and take over in left field. If Crawford leaves
as expected, will the Rays just give the job to Jennings?
-- Kevin C., Dade City, Fla.
Jennings should get a chance to win the job in the spring, but I don't expect
the Rays to give him the job for two reasons. First, they will be doing
Jennings a disservice if they bring him up too quickly. With hitters, the
extra Minor League at-bats always seem to be invaluable. Next, Tampa Bay has
a different mindset than it had years ago. This different mindset is based on
players having to earn their way into the Major Leagues. Physically, Jennings
certainly looks ready -- he has all the tools. I just question if he's ready
to face Major League pitching every night. So I would expect the Rays to
bring in some candidates from outside the organization to compete for the
left-field job. In addition, I think they will give Justin Ruggiano a good
look, and there's always the possibility that they will be flexible and use a
lot of different guys in left.
Justin Ruggiano
Jason Bartlett is my favorite player, and I think he's one of the best clutch
hitters in baseball. Do you think he will be traded during this offseason
since Reid Brignac appears ready to be a Major League shortstop?
-- Brenda S., Bradenton, Fla.
Good question. I do think Brignac is ready to become a Major League
shortstop, but I don't think it's going to be at Bartlett's expense this
season. Given the fact the Rays are facing a lot of turnover, I don't believe
they will be looking to move their starting shortstop unless somebody comes
along and knocks their socks off. He's a solid fielder, he can steal bases
and he hits in the clutch. Plus, keeping him will add to the stability of
next season's club.
Why don't the Rays just go ahead and trade James Shields? Jeremy Hellickson
is ready for the Major Leagues, and Shields was particularly weak down the
stretch last season. I say get something for Shields while you can and put
the kid in there.
-- Walter N., Tampa, Fla.
Shields did have some tough outings down the stretch, however, he did manage
to log over 200 innings for the fourth consecutive year. That's probably the
least-noticed statistic that matters a great deal. When a starter gives a
team over 200 innings, he is saving the bullpen. The more starters who can do
that, the merrier the bullpen, and the better the bullpen can perform.
In addition to the fact I feel Shields still has great value to the team, I
don't believe Tampa Bay will trade any of its starters, given the fact the
club is now around seven deep. The team has been really fortunate that none
of the group has experienced any kind of prolonged health issues the past
several seasons. Unfortunately, that can't go on forever -- pitchers
experience way too much trauma to their shoulders, elbows, etc. Eventually,
they have to have a tuneup.
If the Rays do trade one of their starters, I wouldn't expect to see that
happen until the end of Spring Training, after they've had a chance to
surmise whether they will start the season with a healthy starting staff. And
if they do start the season healthy, who knows, one of the starters might get
bumped to the bullpen to help out.
