[農場] 2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 11 Desmond Jennings
Desmond Jennings, OF
2010 Rank: 6
Drafted: 2006, 10th (289)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
In 2010, Jennings went 37-for-41 in stolen-base attempts (90.2 percent).
That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The speedy outfielder has
been successful 83.8 percent of the time over the course of his Minor League
career, with 171 steals and just 33 caught.
Scouting report:
While his plus speed is clearly his best tool, he's got a lot more going
for him. He's a very good baserunner, as evidenced by his success rate,
which helps him maximize his speed. That speed works very well defensively,
where he's a plus defensive center fielder. Jennings has a good approach at
the plate and understands his role as a leadoff-type catalyst. He may never
hit a ton of homers, but he's got extra-base pop.
Upside potential:
An outstanding leadoff hitter who gets on base, steals a ton of bags and
plays a Gold Glove-caliber center field one day, even if he starts off as
the Rays' left fielder in 2011.
They said it: "It's primarily those two things -- defense and speed. And if
you look at how we've been built all year, defense is a high priority for us.
And you know how we move things along as the game's in progress, whether it's
to pinch-run and possibly stay in the game, we like all of that." -- Rays
manager Joe Maddon on why Jennings was added to the ALDS roster
He said it: "It's always fun playing in a big league stadium, playing in
front of a lot of people. All the talent that is going to be there, you're
probably going to play with some real good players." -- on being named to his
second All-Star Futures Game
