[Note] 2012 TOP 20 TB Rays Prospect (MLB.com)
Matt Moore

It's always a shame when a young player with a ton of talent reaches the big
leagues and struggles with the bright lights of the highest level. All Moore
did was pick up his first Major League victory in Yankee Stadium in September,
then toss seven shutout innings to beat the Rangers in the ALDS. That was after
he struck out 200 batters in the Minors for the second straight season.
No wonder the Rays locked him up with a long-term deal this past offseason.
A great scouting find back in 2007, Moore has evolved from a thrower to a
complete pitcher, with three above-average to plus pitches to choose from.
He has nothing more to prove in the Minors and it will be interesting to see
if he can break through and into the Rays' young rotation in what will be his
first big league camp this spring.

Lee, who joined the Rays from the Cubs as part of the Matt Garza deal, is worth
the price of admission just to watch him play shortstop. He is a plus defender
across the board, capable of making highlight-reel plays. The two-time Futures
Game participant is showing he can hit and run as well. He hits for average and
while he's never going to rack up home run totals, he's not just a singles
hitter. His speed helps in that regard and he should be more of a basestealing
threat as he learns the nuances of that part of the game. He finished the 2011
season in Double-A and that's where he should bring his exciting brand of play
to start this coming season.

Archer has two plus pitches in his fastball and slider that, when he’s locked
in, are good enough to get any hitters out at any level. He runs the fastball
into the mid-90s with good sink that generates groundouts. His slider is one of
the nastier breaking balls in the Minors. His changeup lags behind the other
two, and he’ll need to refine it to succeed long term. He also needs to
improve on his command and lower his walk rate. His 2011 turnaround in the
second half was encouraging and he still has the pure stuff to be a frontline
starter. Worst case, that fastball-slider combination sure would look good in
a short-relief role.

It takes some players longer than others to figure things out. That seems to be
the case with Beckham, the former No. 1 pick some had already put in the "bust"
bin. He was just 21 years old in Triple-A last year and swung a good bat across
two levels, setting career highs in a number of offensive categories. The power
started to come and there might be more as he continues to improve his approach
at the plate. He’s made very good strides with his defense as well. It was once
thought to be a sure thing that he’d have to move off of shortstop, and while
that might eventually happen, he’s made a believer of many. He may not be a
superstar, but it’s looking more likely that he has a promising big league
future. If he’s not an everyday shortstop, perhaps a Ben Zobrist-like
super-utility spot is in the cards.

Age: 22, DOB: 11/30/1989 Bats: R, Throws: R Drafted: 2011, 1st (31)
A football standout in high school, Mahtook looks the part of a premium athlete
and brings that kind of intensity to the diamond. He’s a very good all-around
hitter, with above-average bat speed and mechanics that should allow him to be
a good hitter. He can hit to all fields and his power, which should be at least
Major League average, comes mostly to his pull side. He can overswing at times,
but it’s not because of a bad approach; he just needs to rein himself in at
times. An average runner, maybe a tick above, he’s an excellent baserunner.
He played center field in college, but in the Arizona Fall League he played
only corner spots, where his accurate arm is fine and his bat profiles very
well.
Taylor Guerrieri

Age: 19, DOB: 12/01/1992 Bats: R, Throws: R Drafted: 2011, 1st (24)
A projectable right-hander, Guerrieri was lighting up radar guns last spring,
throwing it anywhere from 92 to 97 mph. He has a plus curve as well, a hard
downer breaking ball. He didn't need a changeup in high school, but he's
shown a feel for it and it should be a future Major League average pitch.
He'll throw in a pretty good cutter for good measure. He has average command,
a solid delivery and a great pitcher's body. All he needs to do is go out and
pitch. The Rays are great about being patient with young pitchers, so they'll
take their time with Guerrieri as he gets started.
Alex Torres

Age: 24, DOB: 12/08/1987 Bats: L, Throws: L Signed: Jan. 12, 2005
Acquired in the Scott Kazmir deal with the Angels in 2009, Torres has pitched
fairly well in his two seasons with the Rays' organization. After a very rough
start to Triple-A, he settled down and was very effective, earning a September
callup. He has very good stuff with the chance to have three above-average or
better pitches. His only real issue is his command. Torres walked 83 in
Triple-A in 2011 and 70 the year before that. There’s no room in the Rays'
rotation now anyway, but if he wants to break through, he’s going to have to
improve on those numbers.

Vettleson made his official pro debut in the Appalachian League in 2011 and
started out like gangbusters, faded a bit at the end, but still made a very
good first impression. He has an advanced approach at the plate and makes
consistent hard contact, enabling him to hit for average as he moves up the
ladder. He has some power and could grow into it even more as he matures.
He doesn't have plus speed, but he's very smart on the basepaths and will
steal some bases along the way. A former pitcher (a switch-pitcher, to be
precise), Vettleson has a good arm that profiles well in right field, his
current defensive home.

That's right, another lefty with a plus fastball coming up in the Rays' system.
Romero is a ways away, but there's a lot to like, starting with a fastball he
gets easily into the mid-90s with good movement. His secondary pitches are
behind the heater, but both his curve and changeup have the chance to become
outstanding weapons for him. Even so, he missed plenty of bats during his
full-season debut in 2011. Delivery issues caused some command problems, but
the Rays are very good at being patient, and there's confidence those things
will be ironed out in time.

Snell is the third 2011 draftee in the Rays' top 10 to start the 2012 season
and has the chance to be yet another talented young lefty. Snell enjoyed a
good summer debut in the Gulf Coast League, throwing his low-90s fastball down
in the zone and generating a ton of groundouts. His other pitches, a curve and
a changeup, aren't quite as effective, and like a lot of young pitchers, he'll
need to refine them, as well as his overall command, as he moves up. Adding
some strength to his lanky 6-foot-4 frame will also help. He has very good
mound presence, which should help him as he starts facing pro ball's tougher
challenges in his first full season.

The junior college reliever looked pretty comfortable in a starting role in the
New York-Penn League in 2011, not allowing an earned run until his sixth start.
He'll have to keep working on his command to stay there, as well as improve his
changeup, but he has a lot going for him, like an excellent heavy fastball that
generates ground balls and a plus changeup. His slider might give him a third
plus offering, but he didn't throw it much. A full-season assignment should be
a good test for the right-hander.

Sale made his pro debut in 2011 and never really got his bat going in the
Appalachian League. There's still plenty of upside in his left-handed swing,
with a lot of raw power to tap into. He just needs to refine his approach to

After taking a long while to hit full-season ball, Colome has jumped on the

and will bring his plus fastball, a curve that's plus at times and an
improving changeup to the upper levels full time this season. He'll need that
third pitch, and better command, to move up, especially with the glut of

The Pacific Northwest high school product brings a gritty, hard-nosed approach
to the Rays' system. He's yet to hit full-season ball, but he’s already shown
the ability to make consistent contact with some extra-base pop that belies his
size, take a walk to get on base and let his outstanding speed work for him on
